Nifedipine?

Hey Ladies,

On Friday night on my way home, a lady fell asleep at the wheel and veered into my car and the car in front of me on the freeway. I felt totally fine, and I tried calling my doctor, but no one was on call (this pissed me off to no end), so I went to my delivery hospital to be checked out.

Turns out I was having contractions that, at first, I couldn't feel. They gave me a nifedipine that did the seem to work and as the night went on, I was feeling the contractions get harder. I got a shot of Terbutaline. Mercifully, before the second shot and the IV, the doctor let me go because my contractions had stopped for more than hour.

They sent me home with more Nifedipine to take every 6 hours if I had more than 4 contractions in an hour...not sure how this will help when I can't feel them...

My question: are any of you other ladies on this? It makes me dizzy and my heart races when  I take it. I'm wary to keep taking it if I don't know for sure that I am contracting. I'll be calling my Dr first thing in the morning,  of course.

I was put on vistaril instead of nifedipine because it can make your blood pressure dip and my blood pressure already runs pretty low. That may be why you're getting dizzy. I couldn't feel my contractions either and quit the vistaril pretty quickly.

  • Not to hijack your thread - and I wish I had experience with this so I could answer your question! - but ladies who are having contractions without knowing it, is there *any* way to tell? Like, can you tell by feeling your stomach with your hands or anything?

@RainMira9e The L&D nurse kept feeling my stomach, so I would assume yes. But I couldn't tell you what it would feel like. My arms were wrapped up in heating blankets trying to make my veins easier to get to.

  • @amye102485 that's a good point. My blood pressure is usually pretty normal, and they did test it before giving me this particular drug.

  • *shrugs* best to call your OB in the morning. Those are common side effects of the drug though, so it's not odd that you're experiencing it- it is usually used as a heart medication. GL and I hope your contractions have quit.

chew your doctor's office a new one for not having anyone on call. WTF are you paying them for anyway
  • I don't know anything about the medicine, but sending positive thoughts your way @MrsHudson2014!
  • I can tell when I am contracting even when I can't internally feel it, by feeling my entire uterus turn rock hard. I take my fingers and try to indent throughout the circumference and If nothing is a little squishy, it's contracting. If there are sides or parts that aren't hard, I know the babies have just balled up and made somewhere harder than the other. Once the contraction is over, for verification, i re-feel and everything is loose again. @MrsHudson2014 and @RainMira9e
  • Thanks for that explanation! @sjo_thetwins Apparently I'm showing contractions while on the monitor but I wasn't feeling anything. Now that I think of it, the whole time I thought it was gas that couldn't decide which end it wanted to escape from.

  • Thank you @sjo_thetwins

@PCOSbaby same here. I legitimately asked the L&D nurse if they were sure it wasn't just gas.

  • I have been having a ton of Braxton-hicks contractions. I can feel everything tighten up and my whole uterus gets rock hard. My stomach gets really misshapen too.

  • Good luck! That sounds scary! Glad you're feeling okay. I would also be pissed about the OB not being on call!
  • I'm so sorry! No experience but hoping you are ok!

  • @NoraAurora baby looks great.  Doc says I can skip the prescription so long as I'm not feeling more than 4 contractions in an hour.
