Circumcision aftercare

edited July 2016 in June 2016 Moms
LO was done today.  He gets upset when he moves around a lot or when he first moves after being still awhile.  I think it's more of a "something is different" more than actual pain.  I'm sure the first 24 hours are the worst.  What is your aftercare experience?

Re: Circumcision aftercare

  • We were told Vaseline on gauze for 24 hours and then can  use Vaseline on diaper until umbilical stump fell off. After that we could stop with Vaseline. OB did say to make sure to retract skin so he doesn't develop adhesions.

  • Make sure to keep the foreskin area lubed up with Vaseline and point his pee pee down. My pediatrician also said to put a little Vaseline on his diaper to make sure it doesn't "stick" to the diaper material. My son is a month old today (his circumcision was done the day after he was born) and it's still a little red but his pediatrician said its normal and to keep up the Vaseline.
  • My LO had his circ at 1 day old. We did Vaseline until it healed (a week maybe less). That's it. What did they tell you to do?

  • They said same thing...Vaseline ever diaper change for two weeks and to after a couple days, check for adhesion.  Just curious how fussy your babies were and for how long.
  • My baby was not fussy at all, but maybe it's because your baby is older than mine was?

  • Mine wasn't fussy at all either. Perhaps because it was done when he was 1 day old?
  • I thought he was going to be done at the hospital but I guess there was some miscommunication/misunderstanding bc the doc from my OB office thought the pediatrician preferred to do them, only to find out she doesn't do them anymore.  I had prepaid the OB office and thought they would do it but between ending up an unplanned c section and LO having a fever and being on iv antibiotics I guess it just got by us in the exhaustion.  Either way, it's done now and he has done a little better as the day goes on.
  • Our son had it done at 4 weeks in the pediatricians office after our son was in the nicu for the first three weeks. My son seemed like he was in a ton of pain. The only after care we were prescribed was Vaseline on his penis for about a week. My son was super fussy (screaming a lot) the day it happened and cranky the next day. However the Vaseline application didn't seem to bother him after the first day. I really wish we could have had it done sooner.
  • I had my son done yesterday and he slept through it. They put some gauze and Vaseline on it and we took it off today. Looks good and he's been slightly cranky, but just nursed him a little extra and he's fine :)
For the next week I'll just be rinsing it at diaper changes and I cover the part of the diaper that touches with A&D ointment (so it doesn't stick).
  • He was fussy and tender with diaper changes for about 24 hours. I was told I could give 1mL Tylenol as needed for pain, so I gave him that the first night we were home because he was pretty upset even after nursing.
