IKEA Dresser Recall

For those of you who have purchased an IKEA dresser for your baby's room, please read this:
https://www.ikea.com/us/en/about_ikea/newsitem/062816-recall-chest-and-dressers
And this: https://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2016/IKEA-Recalls-29-Million-MALM-and-Other-Models-of-Chests-and-Dressers/

The best bet is to procure and use one of their anchoring kits for pretty much any dresser they sell. (You can ask them to send you as many kits as you want free of charge on their website.) If you are unable, unwilling, or uncomfortable doing that, they will offer you a refund. There is a LONG LIST of recalled dressers, it's not just the MALM series.

Even if you didn't purchase an IKEA dresser, consider anchoring your dressers, bookcases, high furniture, and television sets to the wall securely to prevent injury or death for your little one. Many dressers produced today, including those manufactured under nursery furniture brands, pose tipping hazards.

****Note that the popular 8-drawer HEMNES dresser is still being sold, and does not appear to be a part of this recall, but they recommend using an anchor kit to secure it to the wall just the same.

  • I have the 8 drawer HEMNES and I couldnt knock that thing over if I tried so I can't imagine a baby could. We're gonna get another one for the nursery but I'll anchor it just to be safe!

  • @MRSCORKER l was thinking the same thing about the huge ones! My friend was talking about getting earthquake-proof anchors from Home Depot instead (not sure how a crumbling building could realistically be anchored any better by one contraption versus the ikea ones)....lol apparently that's the same thing as child proofing anchors. I'll be a FTM but I didn't know young children had that force in them. We have a 3-drawer in the nursery and a couple others from there in the house so I requested some anchors and will attach them it in a few months when I've made up my mind how furniture should go...

@UponAStar16 You'd be surprised how little weight it takes to turn a dresser over. All you have to do is pull out a few drawers and put weight on them and it loses the center of gravity and overturns. That's how these things happen--the kids pull out the bottom drawers, stand on them, reach up and pull out the upper drawers and go to pull themselves up, and over the whole thing goes. I would anchor anything just to be safe. My husband has a MALM dresser in our bedroom and we are anchoring that sucker before the baby is even born. I'm also going to test my 300 lb solid cherry dressers to make sure I can't overturn them--we may also be anchoring them depending on the result. I would rather be safe than sorry.

We actually have the 8 drawer dresser in DD's room and she actually tipped it 2 summers ago. All the drawers were pulled out and filled with clothes. Plus her room is carpet. Luckily, my MIL was in the room with her and no one got hurt. But we instantly double secured that and every other piece of furniture into the walls.

And everyone, make sure you use a stud in the wall to secure furniture. I know of someone that just bolted their furniture into the drywall and a piece of furniture still fell over.

Good to know! We'll definitely be mounting it!

I have an 8 ft tall book shelf in my living room and it's definitely not secure. I'm wondering what to do with it. Do you guys think it's safe to mount it to the wall or should I just get rid of it and put my books in storage?

We were IN THE CAR ON THE WAY TO IKEA yesterday when we heard about the recall on the radio. We have two Malm dressers in our bedroom. We got the wall anchors for them while we were in the store.
  • We have the 3 drawer hemnes in our sons room. I actually submitted a request a while back to get the anchors, and we still have yet to receive them. ETA was about 2 months, and this was maybe 8 weeks ago. We'll probably end up just driving up to Ikea to get a set for our dresser. I definitely think it's better to be safe than sorry and will be securing the dresser ASAP.

  • Late Post (been out of town for a while). I contacted IKEA about our MALM furniture and they are picking it up on Thursday evening, at no charge to us, and will issue a full refund check once the dressers are back in their warehouse. Just wanted to let everyone know that this is an option.
