Pumping more from one side?

edited July 2016 in June 2016 Moms
Is it normal for one side to give a lot more than the the other?  Also seems odd that the bigger one gives less.   I'm 9days pp and getting about 3oz every pump with one side giving about 2 and only getting 1 from other.  Pumping about every 3 hours (and LO eats all 3oz every feeding...seems too much?).
Edited to say using Medela PISA.

Re: Pumping more from one side?

  • Judging from my own experience with my first, yes, this was totally normal for me. I haven't pumped a lot this time around (breastfeeding more and not having to go back to work in an office), but it seems to be the same now--one side gives more, usually about twice as much. I am sure you will get a lot of feedback here, but you can also check with breastfeeding resources like Kellymom.com and your local La Leche League for more insight.

  • One side always produces more for me (unless she has just fed from that one, then the other finally catches up). I looked it up and Kelly mom said this is pretty typical. Typically the left one but not always.

If your LO is eating everything you produce, could you start pumping more often to build up supply and build up some reserves? Mine did a weighed feed a few weeks ago and ate 80ml which is just under 3oz. But she still eats typically every two hours or more frequently when cluster feeding.

I get anywhere from 2-4 oz from one side and usually one 1-1.5 from the other.

  • I always got mid from one side when I pumped. My two week old eats 3oz at a time. You will want to start pumping more though if you want to keep up

I always get more from my left unless I just fed from that side. My son's pediatrician said this is normal. I vary between 3-5 total on average  usually at least 2-3 on left and 1-3 on right with a 15 min pumping session. Also throughout the day it changes. The most is in the morning and the least before I go to bed.

  • My left is my lazy boob both with my first child and with this one.  I get at least twice as much pumping on the right, even with massaging/compressing during pumping (which does help for me on the left and makes no difference on the right).

  • Size has nothing to do with breastmilk production.

More on one side is normal
