How do you explain what is happening to your children?
In the wake of what has happened overnight in Dallas, while the pieces of this horrific puzzle are coming together how do you explain it to your children?
How do you you explain why black people are exponentially more likely to be shot by the police than any other race?
How do you explain systemic racism, slavery and segregation?
How do you explain anti-Semitism, neo-nazism, and deep seated hatred?
How do you teach them why some women cover their hair and some dont?
How do you teach your children to sing "Jesus loves the little children, red and yellow black and white" but do they see you in positive interactions with people who don't look like you? What happens when the "little children" grow up?
Let's make a promise to the children we are carrying now that we will not ignore these questions but teach them to love. Love those who do not look like them just like they love themselves. Love people who talk differently than them and maybe have more or less than they do. But it starts with us, as moms, parents and families. We sow the seeds of how the world is perceived and we must work to keep the weeds of hate from our hearts. Let's hope to see the fruit of love, tolerance and justice grow in our children and generations to come.
