Work

So what does everyone do for work? Or plan to do for work?

Right now I'm a server at an Italian chain restaurant and a college student in addition to being a full time mommy to DS. When I graduate I hope to stay with this restaurant chain and move up into management. I absolutely love the company and I hope they'll accept me into a managerial position. Eventually I'd like to go on to work as a regional director but we will see where time takes me.

Re: Work

I work for the medical board in North Carolina. It's a fantastic job (plus I have access to all the best doctors in the state!). They are very family friendly here and are so excited for me to bring Eva in to visit during my leave.
  • I work in Tax at a large banking firm.  I'll be a SAHM once DD arrives :)

  • I inspect the condition of commercial buildings when they are looking to get a mortgage from the bank. I work from home which is the best part.

  • I'm a corporate event planner, great job so I won't be leaving anytime soon.

  • I'm a data scientist for a small defense contractor. I'm in a small office and mostly work remotely with people on the East Coast. I hope to start working early hours (6am-3:30pm) once DD1 starts school so I can be home with her for most of the afternoon.
  • I'm an attorney at a law firm. My job is both stressful and rewarding so I love it. I work a lot but get to control my own schedule, which is nice with LOs around. I'll be here for a while!
  • I'm an admin assistant at a nonprofit in WA. Would love to be a SAHM after LO is born, but that probably won't work out.
  • I'm a hairdresser and work for myself! I love it! I work one day a week and my mom watches my daughter while I work.
  • I am a staff accountant at a small tax firm. I plan to take 2 months off when LO arrives, come back and work like crazy for tax season (we'll see if that happens), then take more time off after. Luckily my firm is super family oriented so they're very flexible with time off, working from home, etc. I love my job so that's a plus!
  • I'm a receptionist at a medical clinic.
  • I am a Project Manager for a Civil Engineering firm and an Adjunct Instructor at a local college. I just completed my MBA yesterday!!!!! Planning on staying on with my current company through maternity leave etc. and see where next year takes me. I am teaching one last class before calling it quits in September. We might even relocate due to DHs job. I love both jobs so it will be hard adjusting but baby will keep me busy. As of now we are not planning on me being a SAHM.

  • I'm an accountant at a hospital in NC. My short term disability is only 6 weeks but I'm hoping to at least take 9 weeks. Not too happy about it but I will take what I can get! I'd love to take the whole 12 weeks under FMLA but my wallet won't allow it!

  • I am a caseworker at a minimum-medium security male prison. I find it to be very interesting, never a boring day in the pen.
  • I currently work at a bank and also in school. I recently found out the maternity leave has been extended to 16 weeks. Since I start nursing school in January, once my maternity leave ends I won't be going back to work. I was thinking about being a substitute teacher while in nursing school to bring in some site of money, but not entirely sure yet. I'll have a 3yo, a 1yo, and LO on my hands. We have my parents and DH's parents close by and they're always willing to help out.

  • I work in compliance at a bank in my hometown. We do a lot of auditing, tracking, staying up to date on rules and regulations, etc.  Sounds a little boring but I love it. I plan to come back after about 8 weeks of maternity leave. Would love though someday to work for a large bank auditing firm.
  • I am an energy manager at a water district. There's a lot of great things about my job... I get paid very well for a very low stress job with stable hours. I almost never work more than 40 hours in a week. I desperately want more flexibility and the option to work from home. I'm working with HR and my boss to create a plan but if it doesn't happen I will be praying about my next move. I don't want to be commuting 45 minutes ea way every day to sit in my office and barely see anyone all day. I plan on taking 12 weeks leave then returning part time for at least 3 months. Depending on how this work from home option turns out maybe i'll stay part time longer. We will see. :-)

  • I run a small in-home daycare, which allows me to be home with my children.  Before that I taught first grade.

  • I used to be a primary school teacher. Mainly grades 1-3. Home with my toddler and LO until they're both in school.
  • I'm a HR manager at my company. It's stressful work environment because it's retail. I only get 6 weeks disability when the baby comes but once that runs out I'll be taking the 12 week FMLA leave. I work an hour away and 9 to 11 hour shifts, I just can't see leaving the baby till she's a little older.
  • I'm a nurse in a Pediatric Intensice Care Unit. We take care of critically ill kids, from term to 18+ years old. I only work 2 days a week, but they are long days. I love my job and it is incredibly fulfilling, but so is being home (I feel like I get a taste of both worlds right now)! If/when we pay off all our student loans, my husband and I are hoping I can somehow manage 2-4 days a month total and be home with the girls most of the time.

  • I am a Professor of Kinesiology at a University in Connecticut. My PhD is in Adapted Physical Activity so the majority of my research has been on the use of sport and physical activity as rehabilitation and reintegration of wounded, injured, and ill military personnel. I'll be taking 5 weeks off between delivery and the end of the fall semester and will be back for the Spring semester. My department chair has been awesome and they are moving my courses to the afternoon so I can be home with our little bear during the day and DH can be with her while I'm teaching (:

  • I'm an ER nurse at 2 hospitals (one is my main job 3 12 hour night shifts and one is per diem).. going on 8 years. It's a great job and I love the difference I'm making. I work with adults and kids but if they ever had just straight pedi ed positions I would jump at it. Maybe boston children's some day. Working the overnight means I sleep almost never.. but hoping to try and cut back my hours at my main job after baby boy arrives. 12 weeks seems like crap but I'm lucky I get time at all.

I do home health therapy. I get to make my own schedule, which is great, but having to pee a lot becomes an issue. I'm planning on returning to work, and I'm really worried about how I am going to pump on the road, as well as keep the milk cold for 5-6 hrs.

I'm a teacher. I was full-time at a small private school which I recently left. I am on the school board sub list for the fall and will try to work a little more before baby comes. Then we will see...maybe I can tutor from home for a year or two and just work a few days a month to stay on the sub list.

  • I was a financial service representative for
4yrs then was a sahm for 3yrs went back to work in banking for 1yr 1/2 and once I found out I was pregnant I decided to quit and be a sahm again. For me working with multiple kids in school, sports and adding an infant with no reliable family is more stressful and expensive then me being home. If we had help with daycare I would love to go back to work at least part-time!
  • I'm a full-time student trying to get my Bachelor's degree. I do what I can for work. I do transcription jobs online. Very tedious and the pay is depressing. I do an audio file that's an hour long that takes me 5 hours to finish. I earn $20, making $4/hr. It's really all I can do right now between pregnancy and being a student, though.

My husband works full time. He's starting a new job next Monday and he's taking a pretty painful pay cut to start with. I'm stressing out because we have to get out of this studio apartment and at least get in a one bed, but with his pay cut we won't have the money to until he gets a raise. I'm hoping his boss is right and that he will move up in the company quickly because we HAVE to move before our son's birth. I'm going to be 38 weeks and we'll just finally be moving, I know it.

  • I am a business owner, running H's automotive shop. I do all the business side of things, customer service, accounting, etc.  When DS arrives I will work from home for the most part but will have to come in here and there.

  • I'm a travel specialist for an adventure travel company. I work from home, which is really ideal, and have a lot of flexibility. Really looking forward to seeing how having a baby next to my office will change life, ha ha.

  • @MrsEusini moving when you're 38 weeks pregnant isn't all bad. With DS I went into labor the morning of moving day and had him the next day at noon. I got to sit pretty and direct everyone around with where I wanted things and unpacking gives you something to do on maternity leave. Maternity leave was really boring for me since DS slept a lot during those first few weeks and we didn't have cable or internet. It was somewhat stressful but everything will fall into place.
  • I manage a hardware engineering department at a large medical device company. It has its good and bad days, but overall, I really enjoy it. My team and I get to help design products that make people's lives better, and enable researchers and doctors to better diagnose and treat patients. Now that I'm pregnant and am using health care far more than I have in the past, I end up having my company's products used in my care on a regular basis. It gives me a little boost on the tough days to see the things we make actually being used. On me, no less.
