Tongue?

DS is constantly sticking his tongue out and trying to chew or suck on it.  He started a few weeks after he started teething so we were thinking that maybe it makes his gums feel better.  He's not a fan of the frozen teething toys at all.  He just licks them and then throws them on the ground.
Anyone else's LO's doing some similar?

Re: Tongue?

  • Ive noticed the past few days she does this. Looks like shes chomping on gum. I actually panicked when she did it at first thinking she put something small in her mouth. No idea if shes teething... But she also hates the frozen teethers! I THINK shes teething but I thought that before and she Wasnt. So who knows.

  • Hahaha! DD currently does the same thing including licking the cold teething toy. I think it's adorable. She's teething too.

I'm glad mine isn't the only one.  My mom thought it was so odd when she saw him doing it, I figure I'd ask and see if my kid was just a weirdo :)
  • Ya it looks like she's chewing on gum. So silly :)
  • Mine does the same thing! No interest in teething toys but loves when I freeze a banana and put it in a mesh feeder

We're planning to start introducing solids this weekend, so maybe I'll give the mesh feeder a try.
  • I give my LO cucumber sticks to gnaw on and he loves them! He does the same tongue thing. It's pretty hilarious.
  • Griffin does this all of the time.  It almost makes it look like he's talking to himself under his breath, because no sounds come out, he just moves his mouth and tongue all over the place.  He doesn't like the cold teething toys either. I think they are too cold for his gums.  I now give him the mesh feeder with some watermelon or banana in it. We have several teething toys with textures on them and he is just as happy with those.  I've given him the teether toys that go into the freezer un frozen and not cold. A few times i've even tried just throwing them into the fridge to see how he'd do. He did better, but still prefers a good ol' room temperature toy.  :p

In my province, the public nurses say not to give frozen teething toys because they are too cold on their gums. We're told to just refrigerate them and never use the freezer.

Anyway, back to the original question! My LO also does this sometimes. I think it's totally normal! She just loves to suck, suck, suck on anything and everything.
  • LO has two bottom teeth popping through and he has started to play with them using his tongue- kind of like he's exploring something new there.
But before his teeth popped through maybe a few weeks before he was always "chewing on gum" ( and everything else for that matter
