Marginal Cord Insertion

So I had my anatomy scan on the 24th.. doc and tech didn't mention anything other than the fact that they couldn't get all the views they needed so I'd have to come back. I just looked my results up online the other day and it says I have a low lying placenta (which I took with a grain of salt because I know that can change) but also a marginal cord insertion. I'd never heard of that before so I looked it up.. smart move because now I'm terrified. I called my ob office and they said "don't worry about it" But I am.. has anyone else ever had this? Apparently most people have c sections around 36 to 37 weeks because if your water beaks on its own it could cause the cord to tear from the placenta and risks the baby bleeding to death. Which, you know, is no big deal though. I can't tell if I'm panicked for nothing or what.

Re: Marginal Cord Insertion

  • I was told I have marginal cord insertion too after my 20 week A/S of our baby boy.. Doctor sounded serious while explaining but just wants to schedule another US within 4 weeks to monitor growth bc there could be possibly a chance of growth issues, but they don't see any elevated risk and just want to monitor, eventually she ended the conversation with most to all of the babies she has encountered with this there are no issues with growth even with the marginal cord insertion.  I made the mistake of googling this too but trusting Dr.'s opinion and looking forward to seeing pics again via US.  Good luck with your upcoming appointments also and try not to worry (easier said than done I know  )

  • Thanks @Happilymarried4! Yeah I have since had an appt with my OBGYN and she kinda reassured me of the same things.. she said they would monitor growth since that's their biggest concern but a vaginal delivery is not out of my reach. She said that ultrasounds have just recently started commenting on the cord insertion and a lot of stuff online is inaccurate or describe different diagnoses that get lumped onto the cord insertion and make people think it's worse than it is. So I'm definitely feeling better and kinda lame that I geeked out like I did. Lesson learned ... Google for anything medical is usually a bad idea.. and I'm medical I should know better!

Hi ladies! I recently did a bunch of research because my sister had marginal cord insertion. I also had a friends with velamentous cord insertion. First, there is a big difference between marginal cord insertion and velamentous cord insertion. With marginal cord, they generally just watch growth more carefully, especially at the end of pregnancy as your placenta naturally begins to thin at the edges where the cord may be inserted decreasing nutrients to the baby. That being said, my sister has a perfect 6lb 12oz baby by vaginal delivery with no complications. They said if the baby were much smaller they would have induced her earlier but no talk of c section. My friend with velamentous cord did require bed rest and hospitalization with a planned section at 35 weeks for the reasons you mentioned above, risk of fetal demise with going into labor. Velamentous is way more serious than marginal cord. Both of these ladies in my life have beautiful baby girls that are happy and healthy!! Best of luck to you both!!
