Mild fluid in baby's kidneys.

Got a call yesterday from my OBs office and they said our baby has mild fluid in her kidneys which they found out in the anatomy ultrasound. Of course I heard this through voicemail and the office was closed by the time I got the message. I will be calling Monday. In the message she stressed it was mild but of course as a first time mom I'm worrying. I wouldn't be worrying as much but they want me to do another ultrasound at the hospital. Here in Canada our regular scans are done at a lab. So this has me worrying even more. Has anyone been through this before? And what was the outcome? Is there anything I can do to lessen the amount of fluid? Just want our baby girl happy and healthy.

  • My first kiddo had this and it resolved before birth. I had an ultrasound every 2-4 to check it (and other "problems" which were more severe). I'm not sure sure how many extra I would have had if it was just the fluid thing.

  • Thank you both! This has put me a bit more at ease. the nurse did say it was mild so I'm hoping it does resolve itself. I just didn't know why it had to be at the hospital and maybe your right it's so a urologist can take a better look. I'm glad it's not painful for the baby that's what I was also worrying about. I didn't want her to be in discomfort.

I haven't been through this but I don't know if I would stress the fact about it being at the hospital, maybe they just have newer/better equipment there?? I'm Canadian and all of my scans have been at a hospital, we don't have any "labs" that only do scans here in my area. FX everything looks good!

  • My second DS also had the same/similar issue, which was identified at the AS as well.  We had an additional US early in the third trimester (I believe) to check on it, and it had resolved itself by then.

  • My DS has hydronephrosis (it's kidney reflux: basically fluid in the kidney) and it wasn't even found on the u/s. I asked the OB if there is a chance of it happening with this pregnancy, of this baby having it, and she said what was said above. Usually 9/10 times when they catch it on the u/s it resolves itself. She actually said "we have a joke going with the high risk dr's about it Bc it just almost always disappears" and apparently it's the ones that are diagnosed later that are different. My son is 4 and still has it in one kidney. Sending hugs but also saying to try not to stress it too much!

@Reigh007 I had the problem as a young child. I had 20 kidney infections and was hospitalized numerous times before I was 3. On my 3rd birthday (the earliest the doctor would do it) I had bilateral ureter resection surgery. Basically I had the valves fixed. I had a few problems growing up but only severe kidney infections twice, once at 10 and once at 18. The biggest problem I had was peeing my pants due to the surgery and having weaker muscles because of it (at that time it was like a c section incision, they actually cut that scar out when I had my c section).

Is your son's severe? Mine had to be corrected...too many problems and I was at risk of losing a kidney. I was also 18 pounds at 3 years old because all the infections and hospitalizations. Hopefully your kiddo's isn't too bad and he will just grow out of it!

Eta: OP don't freak out with my store...I was the 1 in 10 then also mine was extreme. Extremely extreme. And now I'm perfectly healthy...I just get pee tests more often than most women do during pregnancy. Outside of pregnancy, I never get checked unless there's a suspected issue.

  • @sourlemon that sounds so painful and horrible. I am glad they were able to resolve it for you!
my son has only had one UTI which was in the NICU and that's how they ended up finding the hydronephrosis. Because preemies are so tiny (he was about 3lbs when it happened) it went straight to his blood. He was a grade 2 in one kidney and the other kidney was just swollen. Today at his last nephrologist appt he was down to a grade 1 in his right kidney with the other resolved. Luckily it has never caused any more issues but we do keep an eye on it and have to make sure he goes to the bathroom every few hours. there has been talk of surgery but Bc he hasn't had any issues they are holding off to see what happens around the time he is 5/6.

  • Luckily I was too young to actually remember most of it. All I remember was being in the hospital for my surgery. Also, little kids bounce back so fast from stuff! I was climbing fences 8 days after that surgery....at 8 days past my c section I could barely climb into bed!

  • My last son had this. This told me st anatomy scan and then I went back for two repeats, but the second scan it has resolved itself. The doctor told me 80% of the time it resolves it self. When my son was born and went to his first doctors appointment I asked them to do an ultrasound on him to make sure his kidneys were clear and everything was great. He's one now and happy and healthy!
