Moms who are still nursing

Hi all!
I just wanted to check in to see who is still nursing their LO so I don't feel so alone. I'm trying to go with LO on this so I'm doing don't offer, don't refuse pretty much. I do say no when we are out and about and offer her water in her sippy (still doesn't like cow's milk) or a snack. Sometimes she's wanting to be on the boob constantly so I try to redirect her. She almost seems like she's clusterfeeding again trying to get all her mommy milk before and after work and won't drink much while I'm away. I guess she never really has though. She nurses to sleep quite often as well. I don't mind her nursing for comfort to an extent and I know she is still young but sometimes I worry I'm going to be ready to stop and she's just going to keep on going. I pump once a day at work still so she has some milk to drink while I'm away but some days I don't produce much at all and my freezer stash is almost gone. I still worry she's going to want breastmilk  and I won't have any for her but I guess we don't get everything we want in life either do we? Anyone relate on any of this?

Re: Moms who are still nursing

  • I'm at home with my son, but I'm still nursing. He nurses about 4 times a day. Sometime in the morning, this could be anywhere from 4-7am, then at his nap around 11, he usually has a quick afternoon session (he occasionally skips this one) then as he goes to bed. If he wakes at night I give him water, which is usually all he needs. Thankfully when we are out he is usually distracted and doesn't ask to nurse. Though we had family pictures a week ago and 15 min in he was asking, I put him off for a little while then told our photographer it would be better if I nursed. She laughed and said go for it, she did our wedding and maternity pictures and is awesome.

I just introduced cows milk today, he took a few sips then was done. I'm just letting him wean as he wants and adding in milk. He drinks water really well, so it will really be replacing some of that at first.

Congrats on on making it this far!

  • I'm still nursing. He nurses at least 4 times a day. I pump once or twice at work on the days I'm there. I'm going by his lead so whenever he wants to stop is ok with me.
  • We are nursing, lots during the day and a couple times at night. We do a little bit of water during the day but I still offer BM first.
  • I'm still nursing twice a day...after work and bedtime.  DD gets cow's milk in bottles/cups during the day.  Her first bottle in the morning is  still pumped breastmilk until I run through my frozen stash.  I'm pump weaning now.  I'm going to continue to nurse in the evenings until either DD refuses or my body quits making milk.  Though if I'm not pregnant again by the end of the year and it looks like it's related to breastfeeding hormones, I may force her to wean.
  • I'm still nursing also. For almost the past week I've cut out one feeding in the afternoon 3:30. I'm going to wait a few more days and maybe drop another.. Right now she nurses around 5/6 am, 9am, 12:30, and 6:30. Only issue is she isn't drinking much almond milk (allergic to milk) so I want to try to get her drinking some more of that before stopping another feeding. I don't really have any reason to stop since I'm home 6 days a week but I'm ready to be done. She now says boob boob and taps my boobs. I only feed her the times above though to keep her on a schedule sort of. Im nervous to start trying to cut the next one, 12:30 would make the most sense since that is when we are usually out. I won't mind keeping the other times for a few more months.
  • I'm still breastfeeding my twins too! They'll be 13 months tomorrow. They don't seem ready to wean yet, and that's fine with me. They still nurse between 4-6 times a day. They get the occasional sippy cup of whole milk, and they take it very well. I still have 600+ ounces of frozen breastmilk, so I quit pumping about a week before their birthday. They get that while I'm at work, until we use it up. I'm so excited that I've made it this far with twins! A lot of people said I'd never make a year. I'm glad I proved them wrong.

  • Still nursing. He clusterfeeds between 5-7 am, and then nurses again around 9:30 am. We are not usually nursing between 10 am and 3 pm or even late some days. He nurses before bed, but not to sleep (his choice, I'm open to whatever works). Then he will nurse at least twice more in the night between 8 pm and 5 am. People say he should be able to sleep through the night by now, but the way he nurses, I think he's actually hungry. And while I'd rather sleep, I'm personally not willing to chance that he's hungry and I personally dislike offering water when it's a hunger issue.

I have stopped pumping, and want to nurse as long as he wants to (will reevaluate that if I'm over it or when he turns 2). I don't have a freezer stash - he drinks water or cow's milk or almond milk when he's not with me. I also offer water throughout the day (but if he asks to nurse, we nurse or wait - no water instead of nursing), and he drinks cow/almond milk a few times a day. Not much - less than 5 ounces probably. We aren't schedule/structured people, but there's a consistency in all this.

@ciennah99 I'd say if you want to keep nursing but are feeling done...if it were me, I'd stop pumping at work and let her drink other milk when you're not around. That seems to be a good balance of meeting both your and her needs. But that's just what works for us, and I know everyone's different. Good luck! You're doing a great job!
  • Still nursing. I flirted with the idea of stopping pumping at work and letting them gradually introduce cow's milk at daycare, but decided we weren't ready. The daycare teacher says he still enjoys his bottles of breastmilk, and I figure I can continue giving him that. I had oversupply that was causing me stress since he wasn't drinking enough on my days off to relieve my engorgement, so I decided to just limit my pumping time to 4 minutes per side by setting a timer. That way I've been able to decrease my supply to what he was actually drinking. He nurses a lot and I don't mind. Easier than cleaning up the mess from solid food...

As of his bday (yesterday) my son decided he is no longer interested. I'm feeling pretty bummed out about it, but im ready, too. It was a pretty amazing experience!
  • Still nursing on demand, although DD gets cows milk when I am not with her. I stopped pumping when I learned I was pregnant almost 3 months ago. I was sick of it, exhausted all the time, and had a bit of a frozen stash. No plans to wean though, we both still enjoy bf.
  • Still nursing about 5 times a day. I've cut out one feeding and will gradually cut out one at a time. Will probably be weaned in a couple of months, but I'm not in a hurry.

  • Still nursing on demand; no plans to wean right now. I'm also pumping once a day, but having frequent fantasies about strapping dynamite to my pump, or throwing it off a cliff... I'm ready to be done with that crap.
ALL OF THIS.  I want to recreate that scene in Office Space where they take the printer out to an open field and bash it with a baseball bat.  That is what I want to do to my pump.  I plan to be done regularly pumping on Friday and will just carry a manual pump with me in case of emergency (or if I'm not around during a normal nursing session for some reason) going forward.
  • Thanks for the feedback ladies! It helps to hear from you. We are not very scheduled either so I guess we are nursing on demand. She just seems to want to comfort nurse a lot but then again I've had a low supply so maybe I'm just not making enough milk and that's why she nurses so often when I'm around? Had some success with a sippy and cows milk yesterday after I nursed her. She gulped quite a bit down, so another indicator she's not getting enough from the boob since we had just nursed. Still pumping once during the day until she gets more comfortable with cows milk and to keep my supply up since I have problems with that. I guess my biggest challenge is she gets so whiny around me because she wants to nurse a lot if I've been gone. I guess I'll just keep trying to go with the flow. Thanks again ladies!
  • I just stopped pumping during daytime hours and I am so happy I did! Supply goes up and down, depending on how much LO eats during the night/early a.m. My LO still BFs to sleep like 95% of the time, but rarely "asks" for it when we are out and about, so that's nice. I say, just go with the flow and offer if your breasts are feeling full, otherwise take LO's lead! Kudos to us for keeping up with this crazy, crazy BF thing!
