Breastfeeding moms...the struggle is real

I'm not even 8 weeks pregnant, and I'm struggling health wise. My baby is only 10 months and I'm not giving up breastfeeding. Between breastfeeding, taking care of my other two kids (3yo and 5yo), and being nauseated ALL DAY LONG, I feel like I'm getting more and more unhealthy. Water tastes gross, most food makes me feel even more nauseous, and I'm extremely fatigued.

The only thing so far that seems to not upset my stomach is tilapia, but how much tilapia is too much while pregnant? My first appointment is Monday so hopefully she has answers diet wise. You would think by the 5th pregnancy, I would have this down, but each pregnancy is just that much harder.

END RANT!

  • Tilapia is a good choice as far as fish goes. When I worked as a chemist, we used tilapia as our "clean" fish to compare against contaminated fish. The smaller and lower on the food chain, the better!
And I'm sorry you're so sick :( I'm right there with you and feel like I'm killing my kids summer vacation because I just want to lay on the couch all day so that I don't puke.

  • I feel for you!  I gave up breastfeeding with my first at about 10-11 months and I cried and cried about it.  I had hit 8-9  weeks pregnant with #2, it was a Saturday and I was home alone with her and she was hungry so I kept trying to nurse her and at first she would try to, but then she would refuse and she was so cranky because she wanted milk and not solid food.  By mid-afternoon I broke down and gave her a bottle of frozen milk and she was so much happier.

After that she tried to nurse a few more times at my urging, but she'd never stay more than a few seconds.  I did have enough milk frozen to get her through to turning 1, which was my personal goal.

I hope you find stomach settling food/liquids soon!!!

That's one of my goals with this baby... To build a major stash like that!

I'm sorry that you aren't feeling very well.

Your BFing relationship and goals are so personal and I give you so much props for pushing forward while feeling like you're being dragged through the mud.  2nd Tri is only a few weeks away and hopefully the nausea subsides and you feel better.

However, I will say this:  you have to take care of yourself.  See if someone can help give you a break with your other two kids, maybe try to hire a housekeeper to come once a week.  Order takeout if you can to ease the stress of having to prepare so many meals.

I hope things get better for you!

  • I am in the same boat but it's getting better! Push through it and the nausea will subside. I love already lost over 7 lbs between being so sick and breastfeeding my one year old. The nurse said just try to eat anything even just plain frackers whatever has some calories. I've honestly stopped trying to chug water bc it just made me so sick and switched to sparkling waters with fruit juice added and Gatorade. Eating fish should be good! I'm 10 weeks now and just the other day I ate my first meal in over a week. I felt so much better and I felt like I could function somewhat. my husband and mil have been amazing helping me and helping with the baby. I'll be praying that you start to feel relief!
  • I heard that as long as you are drinking a lot of liquids/water, your supply should be fine. I am always nervous when I no longer feel the letdown or get the full feeling in my breasts, but it's more likely that they've just regulated themselves. I hope you get to BF as long as you want.

I think I'm ready to be done. My son turns 1 this Sunday and I'm still debating whether I'd like that to be the start of us weaning or not.
