Tongue ties and recessed chin

We are dealing with one. It's middle of the rd as far as how bad but he also has a recessed chin so if it weren't for nipple shields we would definitely be bottle only. Anyone deal with either or both of these?  His chin didn't look deformed, just is a little farther back than it should be.  Hoping that was something that will resolve or at least improve. Going to see what pediatrician recommends for getting tie clipped.  Still need to research that more.

Re: Tongue ties and recessed chin

  • My LO has a tongue tie, but I think it's pretty mild. We've not had a ton of trouble bfing, but my LC in the hospital suggested the football hold as the most effective position. It's not easy on the back though. We're looking into getting hers clipped at her ped appt on Monday.

  • One of the LC had me doing that hold but you re right about it being back killing and I can never get the pillows right. Then with his crazy hands continuously grabbing at the nipple shield before I can get him close enough to latch I as ready to quit.  Then at his newborn pics yesterday he woke up hungry halfway through.  All I could really do was cradle hold under my "poncho" and it worked so i have been doing that since with the boppy and have been less frustrated.

  • The LC thinks mine might have a slight tongue tie but the pediatrician doesn't think so.
  • My daughter was born with an obvious tongue tie and we had it clipped before we left the hospital.  We weren't sure about her latch strength and she was within normal weight loss but I didn't want to get home and have feeding trouble when it could be resolved there.  She didn't cry at all during the procedure and it healed up nicely.  We have had no feeding trouble since and just the peace of mind was worth it for us.
  • My LC referred me to a specialist who clipped my LO's tongue and upper lip the same day. Still need nipple shield though until we can get LO to break habit of clenching too much. She's only 2.5 weeks so I need to hang in there!

Although lactation consultants may be overzealous in their diagnosis of lip and tongue ties, conversely, pediatricians are not necessarily trained in properly identifying them either. If you are experiencing issues with breastfeeding that are indicative of a tie, I would strongly recommend you seek out an opinion from someone trained in diagnosing and correcting ties. An LC diagnosed both of my twins with tongue ties, but said only one seemed bad enough to warrant correction. My ped assessed both boys, came to the same conclusion, and was able to clip my son's tongue tie. Both boys have no issues with their latches now. Not all tongue ties affect nursing.
  • Nursing was very painful for me ( when my son latched on it felt like pinching, burning and almost like he had teeth already). I saw an LC who thought my son may have a slight tongue tie even though my pediatrician had already checked him at his first appointment and said he didnt. I stuck with it and at about 3 weeks the pain was pretty much gone. I did try nursing laying on my side a few times and I think that helped my nipples to recover from when he was latching badly in other positions.

Thanks. The LC and I talked about it more. If she does have a tongue tie it is slight and probably not what is causing nursing issues. However I want to keep track of it because I am more concerned about future issues with speech and language development.
  • I just made an appt with an LC and I know my LO has lip tie but we are gonna see if he also has tongue tie and she gave me a list of ENTs that specialize in ties and breastfeeding.
  • Anyone having trouble with gas issues bc of this?  I think I'm going to try a bottle at one of the next feedings just to see if it makes a difference for the better.  Calling pediatrician Monday to see about moving appt up (currently scheduled Thursday) to discuss this among some other questions I have.
