Transitioning to be SAHM

I'm leaving my job next month to be a SAHM and need ideas from you ladies on how you keep yourself and LO entertained.  Even though LO has a lot of toys, I feel like we will get tired of them quickly if we are playing with the same ones every single day.  What are some of your LOs favorite, can't-live-without toys or books that keeps them entertained day after day?

Also, what types of activities do you try to do with your LO each day or week?  I'm thinking I'll try to do some sort of outdoor activity each day, music time, and maybe some kind of craft each week, and of course some kind of age appropriate educational activity.   Any tips or ideas are appreciated!

Re: Transitioning to be SAHM

  • I think youre on a good path with a daily routine (getting outside, incorporating music). I also keep a weekly rhythm for cleaning, meal planning, baking, etc.

Less is more when it comes to toys! More toys=more mess. Kids just rummage through and toss them aside. Aim for open ended toys (like blocks) that allow for many types of play. Rotate toys to keep them exciting (keep a bin of toys elsewhere, whenever you notice a toy not getting attention, swap it out). Think outside the (toy) box too  sponges and a basin of water, basket of safe household items for sensory exploration, cardboard boxes...

I have up to 6 kids (2 of mine plus home daycare) so I keep a set routine with circle time, outdoor time, activity time (free play for LO, 18m+ have Montessori shelf work), and art or science. That plus meals/naps is a very full day. I incorporate my cleaning and baking into the routine so I get me time after bedtime.

  • Have a bin filled with toys or wooden spoons, pots and pans, ect for your lo to explore and rotate them through. This buys me up to 20 mn when I need to get something down. Also rotate play spaces. I have a bag that I can fill with toys and we take a blanket outside to play on. If you have a dog or cat, they get a big kick out of watching you play with the pet which kills 2 birds with 1 stone.

Take a walk everyday and talk about what you see on the walk. Say hi to other moms that are out and about. I just made a new mom friend this way. If it's too hot for a walk, fill a kiddie pool with water first thing in the morning and by afternoon, it will be the perfect temp. Plop lo in it with a few bath toys and supervise.

Also check out free activities in your area. A lot of libraries have storytime, we have a zoo that's free admission, we've taken a couple of field trips to the garden store, even a short trip to Target can be exciting at this age and there's lots of little old ladies at Target who will coo and flirt with your lo. Look into local playgroups, our church has one for instance. We also do swimming lessons once a week and starting in the fall, we'll be going to a Toddler class through ECFE.

And don't be hard on yourself if you don't accomplish as much by way of chores and such as you think you should because they have a way of detailing that.
  • We'd be lost without this table! We play all day, I have a big baby fence that I use to block off a big part of our living room. We play all day. Love going outside too
  • I got the idea from on here months ago, but I only allow him access to a few toys at a time. Every 3-4 days I swap toys out. He gets excited that way! My LO is ten months old today(YAY) and we are into a lot better groove daily. It was really rough at first(still have our days of omg), but don't be scared to get out and about! The zoo, parks, go on stroller rides....I'm honestly dreading the winter months with a 14-19 month old!?!?! What will we do?!
  • Look up the MOMS club, this is a nationwide club that you can sign up to and hopefully you'll get lucky like I did and find it to be a blessing!
Look up free library classes, take on the grocery shopping and do it with baby.

I'm in Texas so it's the summers that are bad here.  I'm looking forward to fall and winter when I can go outside without being drenched in sweat!  Luckily we have a pool so we will be utilizing that quite a bit this summer.
