I'm leaving my job next month to be a SAHM and need ideas from you ladies on how you keep yourself and LO entertained. Even though LO has a lot of toys, I feel like we will get tired of them quickly if we are playing with the same ones every single day. What are some of your LOs favorite, can't-live-without toys or books that keeps them entertained day after day?
Also, what types of activities do you try to do with your LO each day or week? I'm thinking I'll try to do some sort of outdoor activity each day, music time, and maybe some kind of craft each week, and of course some kind of age appropriate educational activity. Any tips or ideas are appreciated!
Re: Transitioning to be SAHM
Less is more when it comes to toys! More toys=more mess. Kids just rummage through and toss them aside. Aim for open ended toys (like blocks) that allow for many types of play. Rotate toys to keep them exciting (keep a bin of toys elsewhere, whenever you notice a toy not getting attention, swap it out). Think outside the (toy) box too
I have up to 6 kids (2 of mine plus home daycare) so I keep a set routine with circle time, outdoor time, activity time (free play for LO, 18m+ have Montessori shelf work), and art or science. That plus meals/naps is a very full day. I incorporate my cleaning and baking into the routine so I get me time after bedtime.
Take a walk everyday and talk about what you see on the walk. Say hi to other moms that are out and about. I just made a new mom friend this way. If it's too hot for a walk, fill a kiddie pool with water first thing in the morning and by afternoon, it will be the perfect temp. Plop lo in it with a few bath toys and supervise.
Also check out free activities in your area. A lot of libraries have storytime, we have a zoo that's free admission, we've taken a couple of field trips to the garden store, even a short trip to Target can be exciting at this age and there's lots of little old ladies at Target who will coo and flirt with your lo. Look into local playgroups, our church has one for instance. We also do swimming lessons once a week and starting in the fall, we'll be going to a Toddler class through ECFE.
And don't be hard on yourself if you don't accomplish as much by way of chores and such as you think you should because they have a way of detailing that.
Look up free library classes, take on the grocery shopping and do it with baby.
