1st Trimester

Only gestational sac at 6 weeks 2 days

Mainly a lurker here... Not sure what I'm looking for.  I went for an ultrasound at 6 weeks 2 days and there was only a gestational sac.  The doctor was very neutral and basically said it could be too early and to come back in a week.  Did bloodwork for hcg and it was 19000 and then less than 48 hours later was only 24000.  The nurse giving me the results wasn't very optimistic with that increase.  She said it should have gone up more.  I think I have resigned myself to the fact that this isn't a viable pregnancy but I'm just looking for people who have gone through this and had a positive outcome.  Oh and my cycles are very short so it's not like I could have ovulated late or something...I had a clear positive pregnancy test on cycle day 25.  Thanks for reading and any input you might have.

  • I say go for the next ultrasound and unfortunately there is nothing you can do otherwise. The hardest part is waiting. I'll send up done prayers for you and your little one

  • This happened to me. I was freaking out for 2 weeks because I was sure that it wasn't a viable pregnancy. When I went in for my next one it turned out I was only 4 weeks 6 days at the time of the first one and was closer to 7 for my second. We picked up a heartbeat and could see my little bean then. So don't feel discouraged just yet. From my understanding it happens more often than you think. I ended up switching doctors because my first had made me feel uncomfortable. My second doctor said that these cases are the main reason why her practices waits until closer to 8-12 weeks. I'll keep you both in my prayers!
  • After a certain point, betas stop doubling.  Also, maybe you implanted late.  A few days at this stage is a big deal.  So I think there is still hope, but unfortunately this could also be bad news.  Fingers crossed for you.
  • My doctor won't do an ultrasound prior to 7-8 weeks because it's often too early to see the baby, and she said it causes a lot of unnecessary stress.  Thinking good thoughts for you!

Thanks so much for your replies.  I went yesterday for my follow up ultrasound and it did progress.  There is now a yolk sac and fetal pole.  I measured 5 weeks 6 days.  So basically still in limbo.  I'm trying not to get my hopes up but when I saw something in the sac I almost cried.  Also, I found out my uterus is tilted and I've read that can have an impact on early ultrasounds as well.  Another week of waiting.  Hoping for the best.
