Infertility

Day 1 on Clomid...a little nervous.

Morning, everyone -

Today is my first day trying Clomid, and I'm a little nervous. After over a year of TTC without any medical assistance, my doc suggested giving this a try.

Anyone have any tips for dealing with side effects? I appreciate any advice!

Re: Day 1 on Clomid...a little nervous.

  • What kind of doctor prescribed Clomid? Are you being monitored?

  • Clomid is very mild out of all the medications i've been on. Only side affect that I can remember was "night sweats"...all of a sudden would get warm then cool off.. and very moody. Nothing major. Good luck!

  • I just finished my first cycle of clomid.  The SE weren't too bad outside of what PP said - the night sweats had me waking up about four times a night, four out of the five nights I took it.  I will also say that I took it at night which was suppose to help diminish any SE.  The TWW side effects were a little more annoying since I was thoroughly hopped up on hormones.  I wasn't normally touchy but I had three instances where a "nothing" situation absolutely blew up in my hormonal head and I wish in retrospect I'd handled them better.  Also - if you're temping - it completely throws off your TWW temps.  Mine were elevated out the wazoo (99.2-99.6 CDs 22-28) but after POAS, BFN.  Good luck and fx for you!

  • Thanks for the feedback!

My OB/GYN prescribed the climbed for me. He's also a specialist in advanced maternal age pregnancies, etc. (I'm 40).

So far, all I'm feeling is slightly woozy. I think that's because I made the mistake of taking the meds without anything in my stomach (along with a prenatal vitamin). I also have a bizarre metal taste in my mouth, but my doc had warned me about that.

    We'll see what happens!
  • @marcie121775 good luck! I will agree with others, the night sweats were THE WORST! Sometimes it can also take a few days for it to build up in your system and if you are on it for more than one round, ugh, it's like the SE are compounded. I took it at night and the first day or two felt nauseated in the morning until I adjusted.
  • Is your OB/GYN monitoring your response to the Clomid?  For some women, the Clomid may not be effective or may even have detrimental side effects to fertility, like thinning your lining.  I would encourage you to ask about this and consider seeing an RE.

My side effects w/Clomid have never been that bad.  Most of my cycles with it, I've gotten weird aches in my shoulder blade that my acupuncturist said was probably related to hormones.  Plus some hot flashes.

  • Thank you @BrightenMySky you took the words right out of my mouth! You really need to be monitored with ultrasounds and bloodwork while on Clomid for several reasons, most notably to avoid multiples and be aware of any ovarian cysts.

  • I too experienced a bad taste in my mouth (so I started taking it with juice) and major hot flashes. For like weeks it seemed. I also got a tad bit cranky, especially during semi-stressful situations.

  • @Marcie121775- one other thing I thought of that I forgot to mention earlier- a little on the tmi side, sorry:  ovulation constipation is a thing.  Never had this before clomid (but anovulation is my diagnosis so maybe it wasn't the clomid's fault). Find something that works for you for when it hits.

  • I start Wednesday and am nervous too! I have heard some horror stories that make me nervous, and lots of good things too.
  • I would totally echo what these ladies already said. Make sure you're getting more than a 21 day progesterone to "tell if you ovulated". My OB wasted months of my TTC giving me clomid with no ultrasounds and turns out I had PCOS. It could have been way worse because she never looked.  I had severe headaches about day 5 and hot flashes. I took at night but hot randomly throughout the day. Good luck @Marcie121775

  • Don't worry about the horror stories...I think those are rare cases. I had very minimal side effects. I remember getting dizzy once and just being a little extra sensitive once. Nothing bad at all!

  • @Cmckenzie I was on that plan by the OB too and it wasn't until I needed to proceed to the RE that I was told the day 21 progesterone is highly inaccurate.  She informed me that even time of day can affect those results. The ultrasounds can tell so much more and find trouble if it's there and rule out problems to give you the go ahead for TI. I've two other close friends get prescribed that course, it didn't help and then got actually monitored by an RE and got pregnant with femara and iui. I had great promise with Clomid, but didn't like the hot flashes at all and while the numbers "showed" ovulation,  I ended up with PCOS and the OB still doesn't know it.

  • JESSABER0414 I am going to skip the august cycle and insure proper monitoring my next cycle, to many concerns of things that go wrong!

    Morning, everyone -

Anyone have any tips for dealing with side effects? I appreciate any advice!

So I started clomid a few days after you, I am now on CD 11. How is everything going for you? Are you using opks or temping? I am crazy emotional and have hot flashes.
  • I did my first round of Clomid this month and I was super nervous.  I tend to react really strongly to hormones (even low dose BCP's back in the day were awful for me), but the Clomid side effects were pretty mild. I had some night sweats that kept me up a bit, and I was definitely more emotional than normal, but it was nothing worse than bad PMS (I actually had a good laugh with my mom over the night sweats, because menopause has been really mean to her and she's been getting them for years now).  My doctor said time of day didn't matter, so I'd take it at night about an hour or two before bed with my nightly snack (fresh fruit).  Don't get too worked up about it; even if the side effects are awful for you, you only take it 5 days, and then if it's horrid, you just don't take it again and look for other alternatives.
