Vacation/travel advice post??

Headed on a tropical vacation in a few weeks. I'm trying to stay relaxed about it, but would love any and all advice to keep things simple.
I already looked ahead and found a store that sells nursery water, diapers, baby food, etc. I will buy all that on our way to the hotel.

Will the airline fill my bottles to 8oz on the plane if I ask? So that I can pack empty, clean bottles(for no leaks and less heavy diaper bag.)

I just bought a foam stroller fan! Works great!
We are taking our BOB stroller and using a stroller that doubles as a airplane car seat for plane and while in cars on vacation.

Anything else? Ideas? Thoughts? Best baby SPF? He was allergic to 'Coppertone water babies pure & simple lotion with zinc oxide'

  • When we travelled we bought water for LOs bottles in the airport once we were through security.  We wanted him to have bottles to suck on for takeoff and landing for his ears, and the flight attendants were very busy at that time getting everyone seated in the plane, overhead bins shut, prepping for takeoff, etc. that I'm sure they wouldn't have had much time to fill our bottles.  I'm sure once you were in the air and they brought the drink cart around you could ask for additional water if you needed it.

Also, I recommend bringing extra plastic bags in case of leaky diapers on the plane.  My guy had a MAJOR blowout on our way home so I was glad I had a bag for the dirty diaper, as well as for the clothes and blanket he got dirty.

Don't forget to bring LOs birth certificate too.  Sometimes the airlines require it for them to board the plane!

  • Also check with the airlines to make sure your car seat will fit the seat dimensions since it sounds like lo is getting his own seat? Unfortunately most car seats are too big even though they meet FAA standards.

Don't forget white noise for lo. Even if they aren't used to it, I can name a few times where our hotels have been severely lacking in sound proofing and I'm guessing there's lots of honey mooning couples if it's a tropical vacations and I'm sure you get where I'm headed with that one.

Also pack an extra set of clothes for you for the plane just in case. And if you're lo won't take room temp bottles, bring a travel coffee mug that keeps liquids warm for 7 hrs. You can fill it with hot water in the airport and then put your bottle in there for a few minutes to heat it up.

For sunscreen, we use Babyganics SPF 50 and it works great! We had LO out in the 9+ UV index in Florida with that on and he didn't even get a tan (meanwhile, I was burning a little with my own adult 50 SPF on). I would test out whatever you plan to bring ahead of time to make sure LO doesn't have a reaction. Babyganics also makes a bug spray for infants.

For our trip, we packed new toys and books he'd never seen before in his diaper bag for the plane ride to keep him entertained. Totally helped!

We also brought everything he usually uses at bedtime and nap time to make the sleep transition easier: white noise machine, projector/music, nightlight, lovey, sleep sack. He slept great all trip long!

For bottles, I would just buy some bottled water at the airport before getting on the plane. Also, if your LO takes solids, packing some munchies/snacks for the flight or purees (3 oz or less in each container if you want to pack it in your quart-size bag and avoid any possible testing) can help keep them entertained :)

Take advantage of the "family pre-boarding" to get loaded up and settled before everyone else gets on the plane. The flight attendants on our flight were so great and helped us carry everything down the aisle and even held LO so we could get packed up at the end of the flight (they loved little babies!).

    Have fun! :)
  • We are leaving on our first trip tomorrow. We found a baby equipment rental place. I rented a bouncer for him and a stroller. Maybe there is an option for those items you didn't want to lug where you are going. We opted to baby wear him through the airports because of short layovers. I also called the hotel to see what free stuff or services they could offer. Some places will stock your hotel room with baby stuff.
