Massages?

Like with everything, I have been researching everything on the interwebz to make sure it's safe. And like with everything, everything I find about getting a massage while pregnant has been so conflicted. I have a Massage Envy membership and have been getting massages monthly for at least 3 years. Is it safe to get a regular (not pre-natal) massage this early (I'm 7w5d)?

Re: Massages?

  • I have a ME membership too and they turned me away a few weeks ago. Said not until second tri, and then with someone pre-natal trained/certified.

  • Crap. Thanks @MommaBean . I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow so I'll definitely ask, but I had an appointment for a massage tomorrow evening, and need to tell them today if I can't go. I guess I'll skip this one. Grrrr.

  • I went for an appointment at 5w and mentioned to my therapist almost in passing that I was KU and everything screeched to a halt! They rescheduled me for 7 weeks later and I almost cried stupid, hormonal tears bc I was so disappointed  :'( Next month for both of us!

Hey @MommaBean! We have monthly memberships too and I'm skipping until we are out of the first trimester. The PRO side to this is though, that once you're in the second trimester, you can schedule two massages since you'll have one comped on the books! It sucks, but it will be much better for you and baby, and it just think about how gooooood it will feel when you really start bumpin'! And to have someone certified in prenatal so that they know your specific needs!

EDIT: oops! I meant to tag @imalwaysme79 in this one! haha

  • I'm glad I asked. I hope my massage guy is certified for pre-natal massages. Otherwise I'm going to be so super sad. He's seriously the best.

  • Lol I know @lferretti89, I got over my initial overreaction ;)
  • I'm an RMT in Canada and massages are completely safe during pregnancy. That being said, we have much more training than the therapists do in the States, and our initial training also includes training with pregnant clients. As long as the therapist does not to deeper pressure on your low back especially during the first and last trimester, and avoids the acupuncture points that could start contractions on your ankles and hands, you are good to go.

  • I wouldn't. I will try to find it but I read an article about why you should wait until second tri. It was a bunch of reasons, none of which were mc risk. I have  a ME membership but am waiting until second tri, they won't massage you before then anyway.
  • @hispenguin it probably has more to do with them not wanting any hint of responsibility for a 1st tri MC that would've happened regardless of massage, but they told me Bc of the muscle manipulation, 1st tri massage could cause uterine contractions.

@BumpasaurusRex do you have Massage Envy in your area?
  • I think I'll play it safe and cancel my appointment tomorrow, but talk to my doctor when I see her tomorrow too.

@BumpasaurusRex - Massage Envy!! You pay like $60 (maybe it's $70) a month and get a "free" massage each month and discounts on additional massages, etc

  • I'm scheduling a 1.5 hour massage for when I'm out of the first trimester and I cannot wait (a couple more weeks to go!)!  I've read that you really should wait until 12 weeks, so I did this with my first pregnancy and now this pregnancy.  I've had masseuses tell me they won't do first trimester massages.
  • My last roommate before H was a message therapist (it was the best!) and though she would do 1st-Tri massages, she said she had special training and needed to very careful with her technique because of miscarriage risk.  Sorry you'll have to miss out!
  • At the ob clinic I go to the do a thing called pampered pregnancy. It's free with just being a patient there and they offer free massages in first and third trimester. So maybe if you can find someone trained to see someone who is pregnant you can go.
