I have two horses and I'm still riding. I didn't ride for about 6 weeks during my worst MS, but when I asked my doctor he said I could ride up until I'm not comfortable anymore. As with every day horse exposure, you're always taking a risk, so I have stopped jumping and stick to flatwork, and I only trail ride with other people and only on my more reliable horse. My youngster I stick to the arena.
I have found someone to start riding them a couple times a month once I'm not comfortable riding anymore just to keep saddle on their backs occasionally, but I'm sure they'll enjoy the time off. I hope baby will grow to love them as much as I do, my youngster is a pony so maybe one day when LO is old enough they can ride him
I haven't been able to ride even before pregnant because my gelding (8yrs old) foundered in December and is insulin resistant. So he is sadly unrideable for the rest of his life (most likely). Our last ride before he foundered was first time at the beach and he was amazing. My other mare is 20 with arthritis and I decided to give her to my nephew so I work with him on lessons. In February this year I took on a 4 year old not gentled mare that I have been working with. I recently found her a trainer so they can do the tough stuff for me. I am a high risk pregnancy and have weight restrictions and activity restrictions.
I am still out there feeding and cleaninf and medicating (gelding) everyday, but will not risk riding until after baby is born. My cousin who had a normal pregnancy and a 4H leader, rode and trained everyday, hemmoraged in the first tri and almost lost her son just from lunging a hot horse. I decided the risk isn't for me, but everyone is different and I think if you are low risk and have a husband proof horse, light work is ok . Just also be cautious of a western horn on the saddle bumping into baby.
I googled this at one point cause I was curious and it seemed to me the census was you are pretty safe until the end of the first trimester because the baby is tucked in there under your pubic bone. The thing with horse back riding is if everything goes well and stays calm you'd likely be fine, but if something were to spook your horse and you were too fall or something it could be terrible and as your belly gets bigger your center of gravity will shift and your balance won't be as strong. It's your call but I would ere on the side of caution because even the best trained horse could be spooked unexpectedly
my mom is a rider and rode while pregnant with my brother and I.
not sure how long she rode with me - but she rode with my brother up until 7 month (when she was bucked off) and only started again after was a few weeks old. we use to go to the stables everyday with her. especially when my brother could walk then it was easier. and he had fun in the tack room and fields. you could also plan you go down to feed horses etc while baby sleeping and just put him in pram while you potting around.
Was just wondering if there where other horse moms on here! We have 5 horses (3 are mine) and already training my 7 year old gelding for the LO to ride when their old enough to. He's only 14.3 hands, sturdy footed, chill and has an amazing main and tail to braid so he's perfect! Just got the all clear to keep riding at 11 week check up. As long as I still have good balance, staying in my western saddle though and just doing trail rides. No cow work, no train robbing reenactments, and no riding anything crazy. My Dr admits he doesn't know much about horses but said as long as I don't fall everything will be fine. But he agreed I could keep riding because it's great exercise and strengths muscles you can't work any other way. And yes any horse can spook at anytime but most of us know how our horses spook. Meaning we know if our horse is a run from it spooker or a side step spooker or a stair at it and see what mom says spooker. My mother rode through all 5 of her pregnacies with no trouble and so did many of my horse friends. One even competed and showed her horses!
