Awake or asleep?

DS has started this weird thing at night where he I'll start to grunt and push like he has bad gas.  Sometimes he will even let out a cry.  The issue is he does this all in his sleep and its driving me nuts cause I can't tell of he's waking up or not.  He will fuss for a full minute or two grunting, pushing, a cry, ect and by the time I walk to his room he is dead asleep with his mouth hanging open like nothing was ever wrong.  How am I supposed to know when he's really waking up?

    Dd does that when she naps during the day. I've learned to wait a minute before going to get her.
