Pumping at work?

Today was my first day back to work, 12h shift. I managed to pump with a manual morning and night yesterday to get some milk in the fridge (LO uses a sippy occasionally for water, hopefully will take the milk that way). She only ever had expressed milk 3 times, twice with a bottle, once in a sippy, and only took an oz each time. I'm working 11-11, so she nursed twice before I left (morning and nap) and I'll be home for her MOTN feed.

Today has been busy, I got a few minutes to pump at lunch and will be able to pump again now. I'd hoped for more frequent breaks so I only brought my manual (didn't want to lug my PISA). How much milk does your LO drink while you work, and how much/how often do you pump?

Re: Pumping at work?

  • He's only doing 10 oz while I'm at work from 9-5. But he occasionally will take a third bottle of 5 oz. I sent 5 freezer bags to the sitter so she pulls from there if needed. I only send 2 Medela 5 oz bottles a day along with his solids. And I pump about 5 oz on 1 average pump session at work. Sometimes 7 oz. but I also EP and get about 30 oz a day.

  • I nursed at 7am and 9:15am, then she drank a total of 6 oz until I got home at midnight. She was happy to see me, and nursed right away (usually wakes between 11-12 to nurse then sleeps til morning). If I pump the other side before I go to sleep, I will have 12oz pumped today. Doesn't seem like much... but maybe she'll wake again tonight to catch up-we'll see!

  • My little guy eats 9 oz when I'm away from 6:45 a.m.-5:30 p.m., two 4.5-oz bottles. I nurse him before I leave at 6:30 a.m., then right when I get home around 5:30 p.m. and before bed at 8 p.m.

He also eats three meals of solids during the day: oatmeal and puréed fruit for breakfast and some crunchies/baby crackers, veggies and snacks for lunch, and oatmeal and fruit for dinner. We'll substitute whole wheat pancakes, waffles, or bread for the oatmeal sometimes so he can feed himself, or sweet potatoe fries, slices of banana, etc.
  • I nurse LO at 6:30am. I pump twice a day and get 12 ounces (at work from 7am to 3:45pm). I split the milk into three sippy cups (4 ounces each). Daycare reports that he will only drink 1 or 2 ounces from the first sippy but will usually drink the other two, so about 9 or 10 ounces a day. He is offered solids throughout the day. I nurse at 4:30pm and again around 7/7:30 when he goes to sleep.

LO still wakes every two hours so I nurse through the night whenever if I can't get him to go back to sleep by rubbing his back. In the beginning (3 months), he reverse cycled and I was freezing milk everyday. After a few months, he started drinking more and now back to less because of solids.
  • As a former exclusive pumper you need to express at least for 20 minutes to keep you milk supply up. In a 12 hr shift I'd pump 3 times maybe 4 if you have a long commute. I know nurses have a hard time leaving the floor to pump.
  • Second day she only drank 5oz as well, added 2 extra feedings at night *sigh*. Next time I work she's with a sitter instead of DH, so I can give more specific instructions.

@Yiggle09 I just pump until the milk stops. I have a good supply and only pump occasionally though. I can only count on 2 breaks. I was hoping to pump 3 times with a manual (one side, 5min for 4-5oz), but I'll have to bring my PISA next time so I can eat while I pump.

  • I nurse LO before daycare then I will pump between 2-3 times a day (however it works out I make sure its usually every 3 hours -- 4 sometimes if its super busy and I can't get away - or 2 if I know the 3 mark wont be able to happen). I pump for 20 mins. I know this can be a lot for some workplaces so I try to have my bag all plugged in, handsfree bra and bottles ready and all set up to go (eliminating a lot of the setup/take down time), I also use a wet/dry bag to place the pump parts in and store in the fridge until the next pump (again eliminating the time to clean).

LO is at daycare from 9-4:30 and eats every 3 hours. I send four bottles with LO to daycare all 4 oz a piece. I usually get one sent back home. Starting out we had to play a bit on the ounces to see what he would take / want and we ended at 4 ounces.

  • I usually nurse before work around 7ish. Then at daycare she gets offered 3 4oz bottles (usually at daycare 8:30-5:30). She doesn't always finish her bottles though. She also gets a couple oz of fruit/veggie purée for breakfast and lunch. Therefore at work I pump 3 times (usually every 3-4 hours at most and one of those pumps is during my lunch break). I work as a vet tech and my job is very understanding with my pumping schedule. I'll then give her dinner purée at home and nurse her before bed at 8:30/9:00.
