Birth: Vernix

Hi!

Just had a question on what your thoughts are for the vernix coating on our babies once they are born. Most hospital's go to wash it off right away but I also read it is beneficial to leave it on until it is absorbed into our babies?

What are your thoughts on this? Will any of you leave it on or just have them wash it off :)

Re: Birth: Vernix

  • I honestly never thought about this. I remember the nurses wiping my kids down but they didn't litterally do their first bath until shortly after delivery. But then again I was so out of it. I have heard the same thing though.

  • At my hospital they do immediate skin to skin for 1-2 hrs if all is well with babe and mom and don't bath, weigh, or anything besides make sure baby is healthy until afterwards. At my birthing class they said vernix is like the best moisturizer for the babies skin (it's why they don't come out wrinkly after taking a 9 month bath!!) so no harm in it being there for a while!
  • As long as me and baby are ok after delivery, I plan on keeping baby on me and not having him washed or wiped down, or weighed right away. I've heard that you shouldn't wash their hands right away, the scent on their hands helps them find the breast to nurse. After the struggle of trying to nurse my first 2, I need every little thing on my side to help us get the hang of it asap. I haven't heard much about the skin otherwise, but I suppose if things go according to plan my baby will be left with it on him for a while too. Can't hurt!
  • Our hospital wipes baby off right after birth before the placenta is even delivered. They're more concerned about getting the blood off of the baby than the vernix and putting a diaper on. Either way, doesn't matter to me. DS was just fine getting wiped off right after birth and baby girl will have that done, too.

Agreed. My hospital waits about 12 hours until the first bath too. They also said it's not going to just wash off, she'll have it in crevices for a while and to just leave it alone until it is absorbed or fades away.
  • With my dd the hospital recommended waiting for the first bath until baby was a day old.  They would have been completely okay with not bathing until we got home a few days later (c-section) but my husband was nervous and wanted to have them help for the first bath. Born Thurs night bathed Sat night.

With our birth center birth, we never washed it off and delayed first bath for like two weeks.  It all absorbed in and baby never smelled more like MY baby.  Had no issues.

  • They do a quick wipe to get blood off and get baby up to the chest for skin to skin.

My forst had a huge poo while on my chest because she didn't have a diaper yet. They gave her a bath pretty early. My second got a bath on day 1

  • Our 6 yo DD had a bath within the first hour of being born. However we found out that my OB now recommends waiting 6-8 hours before her first bath. I am going with whatever my doctor recommends. (It is the same dr and hospital as before. I assume things have just changed.)
  • They're going to wipe the blood off, and in turn some of the vernix is going to go with it.  However, you can tell them that you want as much left on as they can.  It is good for their skin, if you choose.  DD didn't get a bath right away, it was at least several hours after birth and it was our choice.  The nurse actually came in and asked if DH wanted to give her a bath in the sink once we were in our mother/baby room.  I still had my leg compressors on so I couldn't get up yet.  She didn't have much vernix left on her, so I let them have at it.
