DIAPERS

OHMIGOSH! My 2 week old went through 1/4 a bag in the last 5 hours. He has diaper rash so I want to change him often, but this is asinine! He peed through twice. Poop, poop, poop. Then I'll start to change him and he'll pee on the one I was about to put on him, even though he had been awake for awhile. Holy cow!

Is anyone else thinking they'll have to spend their kid's college tuition money on newborn diapers!?!

I hear him popping right now. Maybe it's a growth spurt. He's also been eating for the last 5 hours.

Re: DIAPERS

  • Yeah this is why I went cloth.  I've also learned to hold his butt up and wait a few minutes (since that position helps move the bowels along) while changing him just in case. Also I notice if his penis is stiff that means he's gonna pee soon (weird right?)  So I will take the dirty diaper, open it a little, aim that sucker down and blow cold air on it.  That way if he has to go, he'll go in the already dirty diaper.

I noticed the stiff penis sign as well. My husband thought I was crazy until he noticed it and was promptly peed on. We stocked up on diapers before the kiddo arrived based on calculations we researched so we should be okay but yea, definitely isn't cheap to do disposable.
  • Everyone told me to only buy one pack of newborn diapers, so I did just that, got 148 diapers before she was born.  Hospital sent us home with 200 newborn diapers and two last week and had to go out and buy more.  I think we'll be out of them and into size 1 in the next two weeks but I was not expecting to need so many newborn diapers!

  • I expected to have a bigger kiddo so was not prepared to need newborn diapers. Luckily my work had given me a huge pack and they gave us the ones from the hospital. We've still gone out and bought a couple more cases. My fancy girl prefers to poop in a clean diaper. So we would change her and within 15 minutes would need to change her again. Some days she is going through 11-13 diapers. We have cloth but are waiting til she is a bit bigger to use. So expensive!
  • I would agree that the amount of diapers is amazing!!  I too was expecting a bigger baby and only had one small pack of newborn diapers at home (honest brand, which it turns out I completely detest!!) And what I came home from the hospital with.  Poor thing was too small for newborns so we went through about 5 packages of preemie diapers and they do not come in a value size.  We used those for about two weeks and are in newborns now.  All of the remaining 400 or so diapers i have from my shower are all size one.  It may take another month before he is that size seeing as he is not even 7lbs yet. I contemplated cloth diapers for approximately three seconds early on into the pregnancy and dismissed the idea seeing as laundry is not my forte and signing up for one more service would make my head spin!  Kudos to all who has this kind of energy and dedication!
  • Thank god my in laws work for Walgreens and buy us so many diapers it is insane. We went through over 500 newborns for the same reason. Mine also got wicked diaper rash that I thought would never go away since he was pooping so much and the cream never got to sit. So I started putting breast milk on it and it's been so much better!!!

With newborn rash, blot I stead of wipe.  It helps so you're not irritating the skin so much.
  • I stocked up on diapers so we would be set for at least 2-3 weeks without having to go out. Flash forward to little miss having sensitive skin and is returning every diaper we have to get the pampers sensitive  :D

  • We're on the other spectrum DD is way bigger than her brother and we have more newborn diapers than we will use. She really needs to go to size one now but I'm trying to make them stretch another week.

  • It is expensive. I bought a box a month of diapers through the spring, a friend gave me a pack, and SIL bought us a big box, so I haven't had to get any diapers since she was born, and I'm probably set for another month or two. Same with formula. I'm hoping to make it to September before buying either. And I'm hoping to potty train my two year old by that time so I'm only buying diapers for one

  • Anybody else's baby HATE diaper changes, no matter the time? Jackie screams until she's purple the entire time seems on her changing table to change her clothes or diaper and I'm wondering if there is a way to make it tolerable. Maybe she's cold? Would a heating pad under the cover calm her down? Maybe more padding? I get so stressed out, especially since she needs to be changed so often. We try to use a pacifier during them, but it never stays in long.

DS was like this he is 3 now and he was always pain to change its so hard but I think it's mostly just their temperament. We used a wipe warmer but didn't help. This LO doesn't fuss a bit such a nice change. Sorry I didn't give you any great pointers but at least diaper changes will be less frequent in the future.

My son hates the cold wipes. We got a wipe warmer which helps a little but he still cries. What I found helpful is to have his bottle ready if it's close to when he's going to eat and give him a little, change him, then feed him the rest.
  • My first went through a pack a day the first few weeks. It sucked! Thankfully, it slows down after the first month or so. This one only goes through about 8-10 a day. Each baby is different. Some poop non-stop, some pee non-stop, some do both non-stop, and some don't go much at all.

  • I guess I'm in the opposite boat, I'm thinking how few diapers/ money in spending this time around compared to last time with twins. I guess it's good to have a set of multiples first so it seems cheaper next time lol ; ).
  • Sydney is 5 weeks and still in NB diapers. Size 1s are wayyyy too big still.

  • I can't wait for us to outgrow newborn diapers. We are so close (7.5 weeks). What I don't understand is why they are so much more expensive. There are no stores that sell the gigantic value packs that are part of the typical deals that I have found. My friend told me aim for $.18 per diaper and that's a good deal. The best I have been able to do was $.25 for newborns because of this value pack issue. Oh and I'm sticking with pampers swaddlers when I say this. I couldn't handle not having an indicator strip.

  • I have been doing pampers too, but the Huggies NB has the indicator strip the and the value box has about 8 more diapers.  They seem to run a little bigger too.  We received a package from the hospital and they weren't too bad...i just keep getting $1.50 off coupons from my pediatrician for the pampers so I haven't picked any up yet.  I think the box has 136 diapers... Not 100% sure.  My baby did preemie diapers for two weeks...i could only get the small packs of those...26 per pack for $8.99.  i generally go to Target and get the 5% off with my red card.
  • It is crazy how fast they can go through diapers, and when using disposables, yeah, it's like you're tossing away money. We had DS in disposables for about a week in an attempt to clear up his horrible newborn rash (it didn't seem to make any difference for us) and I've never been so grateful to go back to cloth. I could buy a new upscale wool cover every two weeks for what I'd be spending in disposables, it's insane.

Also, the stiff-penis-about-to-pee thing is crazy to me, but it totally works. I'm either lucky or pretty good about noticing his signs and getting something on him, but DH is getting peed on constantly.

  • My DD likes to have insane poops right after we change her. She also hates being changed and usually screams bloody murder. We have Amazon prime and subscribed to Pampers swaddlers there for 17¢ each. We've gone through so many, hoping she slows down with the poop frequency soon.
  • Right now target has buy two boxes and get a $10 gift card.. the boxes of 128 newborn are $34.99, plus I get the extra 5% off with the red card.

1- the newborn diaper "advice" is some of the worst given to new moms. I always tell moms to buy extra in that size.

2- it gets better!! they don't use as many when they're older, and it also doesn't make them as uncomfortable so you don't have to rush/force changes if you're out and about. Except for blowouts. Always be prepared for those.

  • I second Amazon prime I get 20% off diapers and that's the best price I've found.
  • Yeah, we're in the same boat.  He's 7 weeks now and still going through diapers like crazy.  He leaks a little poop every time he passes gas and then screams until I change him because he hates a dirty diaper (I don't want to leave it on and give him a rash either.)  He also pees on the clean one sometimes.  The other day we went through 6 diapers in an hour this way.  I told him it's coming out of his college fund and inheritance

We actually just stocked up on diapers so we won't have to go out for a while. I was getting nervous of not paying attention and using the last diaper late at night. We also found an amazing deal with target... $10 gift card when you buy 2 packs and $25 gift card when you spend $150 and then $2.00 off per pack coupons. We spent $120 and got $55 in gift cards and ended up with 6 value boxes of diapers. I think it averaged about $0.10 per diaper. Babies r us are doing $15 GC for $50 spend on huggies right now too.
