Thought this would be fun and a good source of names for anyone who is looking for some fresh ideas - what are some names you love but can't use? Here are mine, all ruled out because they were either ex boyfriends names, names I gave previous or current pets, or names of children already in our family or close group of friends:
Boys: Harrison Jefferson Asa Franklin Lincoln
Girls: Clara Laurel Beatrice Clementine Jane Margaret
Johannes - h isn’t sold Horst - a bit awkward in English Lyle - I love this name, but I'm about to gain a Kyle as a BIL, so I'm afraid it might be too close. Probably will middle name it if we ever have a boy. Alistair - love it, but we're not Scottish.
Girls Lenore - I love Leona more, and feel like it's too close. Yui - we're not Japanese. Adeline - too popular, too many spelling variations (and pronunciations ) and I am absolutely a snob. Emma - loved it since high school, way too popular. Rosalind - my current D&D character is named Rosalind, feels weird to consider. Maybe if the campaign ends before we have a girl or she dies I can use it? Zelda - I'm too much of a fan girl for the video game series, not fair too a kid.
Boys: Daniel- DH Benjamin- BIL Matthew- BIL Joseph- BIL David- BIL's middle name that DH is iffy on because of Mitchell/Mitch- DH thinks the nn is too close to a curse word- I *love* the name and nn both! Gideon- DH thinks his nn will be "Giddy" Peter- both our dad's name, no thank you. Andrew- WAY to many friends Michael- DH's best friend Nathan- DH's best friend's son Christopher- DH's best friend's son's mn Joshua- DH knows a couple bad ones Seth - DH cousin Conner- DH says it's too close to Cooper which is not only DH's mn, but one of the few boy name's he's agreed to let us use (though we both prefer it to be a mn)!
Girls: Emma- DH's sister's name is Emily and it's too close Anne- DH's sister's name is Anna and it's too close Penelope/Penny- DH doesn't like it Adeline- DH doesn't like it Felicity- DH may let me have this one if I keep working on it Evie- DH: "that's the name of a pokemon and we're not using it" (plus with a "W" last name - anything beginning with "E" makes her initials "EW" which SIL hates. Ashley- DH just doesn't like it
Trying to work around my husband's tendency to not be ok with the name of anyone we know has been exhausting.... Doesn't help that he prefers super plain names where I love the "pretty/whimsical" ones.
The one name we both agree on is Samantha. Fx we can agree on a boy name!

Me:27 (diagnosed anovulatory May 2016) DH:29 (normal) Met 2008 | Dated 2010 | Married 2012 TTC#1 since June 2015 June 2016- 50mg generic clomid CDs 5-9 w/TI | 2 follies (14 & 12), thin (2.45) lining | BFN July 2016- 1mg estradiol CDs 1-7, 50mg generic clomid CDs 5-9 w/TI | 2 follies (14 & 10), thin (~4) lining | BFN August 2016- 1mg estradiol CDs 1-7, 50mg generic clomid CDs 5-9 w/TI | BFN | Referred to specialist, visited once, was told we have less than a 3% chance even on medication, recommended to IUI for up to a 50% chance, decided not to pursue at this time | Stopped "trying" October 2016- We became licensed foster parents November 9, 2016- Arrival of DD#1, 4yo March 1, 2017- 1 day late, feel like crap (low fever & exhausted) | Mom suggested test before taking meds, I laughed but did it anyway | BFP! *shock*
I feel like there are sooo many names off the table for me, since I have a huge family and tons of friends with babies. Oliver, Grant, Graham, Lincoln, and Henry are my top "bummer" names for boys. Girls I actually am okay on (for now!) except for Elena, since a best friend just used Alaina.
I think my bigger issue is my own set of criteria: nothing that people automatically shorten or nn (I love Thomas, Daniel, and Timothy, but wouldn't use them), and no other disciple names (love Peter and Andrew, but DS1 is Simon).
Girls: Olivia Rosemary/Rosalie/Rose Aurora, Alice - DD's name is that of a Disney princess, so I don't want to choose any more major Disney characters
Boys: (not that it matters, since we're having a girl) Gabriel, Charlie, David - all names already taken by cousins Jack/John - it's my dad's name, and his dad's name. I adore my dad and I loved my grandpa but my dad didn't get along well with my grandpa and doesn't want any grandkids named after him.
I have friends named Charlotte and Clara, so those are out. Friends or family have kids named Eleanor, Layla and Gianna. H's uncle is named William. I like Ruby but H says it makes him think of a horse I used to ride- she wasn't even my horse. Plus she was really cute. Hmph. I like variations of Rose but we already have a ferret named Rosie. Lots of names ruined by the fact that H is a teacher and has bad associations with them, lots of names that I think are neat but are from different cultures and are therefore inappropriate for us to use.

healing comes in waves, and maybe today the wave hits the rocks and that’s ok, that’s ok, darling. you are still healing, you are still healing- Ijeoma Umebinyuo, be gentle with yourself
Girls: Lilah - Doesn't work with our last name Caroline - Close friend named her baby that a couple years ago Brynn - DH hates it Makenna- DH hates it
Boys: Cullen - Associated with Twilight Brady - Too close to an exboyfriend's name Owen - DH says it sounds like a fat kid name (?) Ezra - DH says it sounds like a girl's name (also ?)
Girls: Felicity-name of a character in a story I'm writing. Emily: I know one I don't like, and it's my nieces middle name. Laura-WAY too close to my boyfriend's ex's name. Leia-last name issue Anything that starts with L: Last name issue.
Boys: Daniel: used WAY too much in my husband's side of the family. James- I'd love to name a boy this, after my Grandpa but I don't want to make it look like I prefe one brother over the other 2.
@Bringmemylongswordho - My husband feels the same way you do about Zelda! Can't separate it from the game. I love it and would totally use it, but you're both probably right about that association being strong.
Love Felicity, which has come up a couple times! Definitely adding that to my future girl names list!

We named our daughter Rosalind. It's awesome! My D & D character is Freya, so we couldn't use it for our babe.

Rosalind is such a great name, I'm kinda kicking myself for using it! I should have used a name that H hated instead.
Since both of my groups are on a bit of a hiatus I have to ask, what's your class? What edition do you use? (Rosalind is a half-elf knowledge cleric, and we use 5e.)

Cole, Kate, Phoenix, Riley - dogs and cat Julian - I love it, DH hates it, so I named my car Julian Andrew, Ella, Bradley, Alaina - friends' kids Brock, Brody, Bronson - our last name starts with "Br"
