Side sleepers

is anyone else's LO rolling over and trying to sleep on his/her side!?  Cole is 2 weeks and 4 days old and we can't put him in his crib because he rolls on his side :-/  for now we have him sleeping in his swing, which I'm not thrilled about, but at least he can't roll over in there..  Any suggestions on how to get them to stay on their backs??  (I am not swaddling him anymore- he wears pjs to bed so his arms and legs are out, which the doctor said would make it more difficult for him to roll over..)

Re: Side sleepers

  • I made him a little bumper system for his first few weeks cause he would roll in his co-sleeping.  We took a towel and rolled it right hen put it on the bottom half of the sleeper so it would only wedge against his bottom half.  My mom had the idea that we could do the same thing in the crib only make sure to wedge the towel under the crib sheet and use a towel that, when bent in that U shape won't reach past his waist on either side.  Worked perfectly cause he wasn't able to roll and even if he tried to turn his upper body, the towel prevents him from going the whole way and it kept his face 100% clear.  Let me know if I didn't explain that right, I can set up DS in it and post a picture.

  • My LO rolls on his side too. We are only using the crib for naps, and I constantly check on him. He's in the bassinet at night, and it's harder for him to roll over in that, but his head is sometimes to the side. To be honest, I'm not worrying too much about it, since he can breath, and he can't roll to his stomach.

  • Yes, mine has been rolling to his side since a few days old. You can get a positioner to keep baby on back. I find the swaddlers actually help keep them from moving so much, but there's not much else to do. Mine sleeps on his back, side, tummy. My first was a tummy sleeper. To be honest, if he is strong enough to roll to his side, he most likely isn't going to suffocate. And you can get one of those breathing monitors, if you're worried about him sleeping in his crib and rolling over.

  • Yes, she rolls to her side.  Can't stop her.
  • I'm with blue cheese. If babies can roll over they're strong enough, I believe, to stay over. You wouldn't want to put them down on their tummies, but if they themselves get that way...

  • Honestly I've never done anything to prevent my kids from rolling. I always put them down on their back, but once they learn to roll over to me that means they are ready to roll over. That's good that you don't swaddle anymore though, rolling while swaddled is not good.
