vesicoureteral reflux (urinary reflux) in baby

Does anyone else have a child with this condition?
Did your child go on prophylactic antibiotics? The specialist wants my baby who is 7 weeks to be on bactrim for a whole year ! I am worried about antibitic resistance and so on.just curious if anyones child outgrew the condition or need surgery?
i have heard probiotics is another option just not as effective. And dr never gave me that option.
I would love to hear real life stories. Thanks!

3 of mine have had it.  DD2 was 9 months when we found out, DS1 was 4 months, and DD3 was 3 years old.  DD3 didn't show symptoms like the others.  She spent her first 3 years crying, which made me feel bad.  I should have known.  Anyway, the older two were on the antibiotics until 18 months old, they were then tested again and had outgrown it.  I'm not sure on antibiotic resistance because they haven't needed it since.  DD3 was never put on an antibiotic.  We just watched her.  I didn't let her do anything that let her stay in standing water. Showers only (I continue that with all kids to this day, including Autumn).  She's 8 now and has no more issues.

Thank you for the response! I just wish there was other options than an antibiotic but I guess if that out weighs the alternative.

My 3 month old has been on amoxicillon or Bactrim since birth due to hydronephrosis.  He has a vcug next week to test for reflux but will most likely stay on the antibiotics until he has another surgery next year. I also worry about antibiotic resistance but have talked to our urologist, nephrologist pediatrician about it a lot and they all agree that it is the best choice because of how dangerous an infection could turn very quickly

Just found out Wednesday that baby Michael has this. They put him on Bactrim too and will do another ultrasound in 3 months to see if the hydronephrosis has gone down. Then at a year and a half they will redo the catheter test...

By the way, did anyone else get super pissed at the Dr. when they were running the test. The nurse came in put in the catheter and it was a full 30 minutes waiting for the Dr.. Baby was sucking on the sweeties so he was fairly calm but you could tell he was uncomfortable being naked in a cold freaking room with something put up in his little manhood. Anytime the sweet taste was gone, he'd spit the pacifier out and start crying. I know Dr. have a ton of patients to deal with, but at least don't have the nurse put in the tube until you are ready for the test.

I noticed some strange, almost green mucus is T's wet diapers the other day. I took him to the ped thinking he must have a uti. They cathed him for a sample (worst thing ever) and found he had white blood cells and nitrates in his urine signaling a uti. They gave him a antibiotic shit while we were there and a script for oral meds as well. The ped was really surprised that he didn't show any other symptoms and she had never seen mucus in urine like that before. They also found proteins in his urine so she ordered a kidney and urinary tract ultrasound. We got it done yesterday and they said we should have the results on Monday. The ped suspects either enlarged kidneys or urinary reflux

I wish I could have seen this sooner. I haven't been around lately because my baby was in the PICU for a week. He got sepsis and a kidney infection from a UTI. He showed no symptoms until the day we rushed him in the hospital because that day he had a fever and later that night he was grunting and struggling to breathe. His heartrate was 268 and his temp was 104.6 that night. Other than that he was just fine until then. 4 days in the PICU and a week in the hospital, he had a picc line put in and he was on antibiotics for a week with that at home. Now he's going to be taking Nitrofurantoin for the next six months. He's got a VCUG next week.

@rebelone So so sorry to hear that, I hope that you both are okay and that he's doing better now. I can't even imagine how scary that was for you! Sending you hugs, and I'll be thinking positive thoughts for you and the baby. I'm glad that there is a thread for other mom's going through this, it's a good support.
