Healing powers of breast milk

First, there are so many things you hear about breastmilk! I want to know what everyone has used it for. From sunburn to bee stings and anything in between, let me know!

Second, my lactation consultant advised me to get checked for a yeast infection. Unfortunately it is a Saturday and the office is closed on July 4th, as well, so I have to wait until Tuesday. My baby has yellow eye discharge and I wanted to express a little milk into it. If I do in fact have a yeast infection, would this be bad for his eye?

  • Off topic question: how long did the eye goop last for everyone else?

DS will be three weeks on Wednesday and still has tons.  Dr said it's not an infection when we saw him Tuesday, but I feel like it should have stopped by now.
  • Egirl, that is incredible! I don't know what his levels are, but he was fine at birth and is a month old now. He woke up with it unfortunately

Sorry to say the duct can take up to a year to open.  Our midwife and dr both said just keep it clean with cotton and warm water, maybe do the inner eye massage but it can come and go.  I've heard people have it for months and I've heard it only being a few days.  Sometimes it can even go away and come back months later.  It's gross and ugly and annoying but as long as it's not infected then it's normal.
  • I put it in DS eye to clean out the goop from his blocked tear duct.  I also put it on his butt when his diaper rash was bad.
I've done the same with the blocked tear ducts. But I never even thought about doing it with his killer diaper rash. I'm going to try it.

  • We went to urgent care for his yellow discharge and the doctor prescribed him antibiotics for pink eye! His only symptom is yellow discharge. I'm worried he's on antibiotics for nothing.

  • Do not put breast milk in baby's eyes! Try to stay away from orifices with fluids, including tear ducts. Most likely, the yellow goo is due to narrow or blocked tear ducts, and will repair itself over time (usually in a few weeks, but can take up until the first birthday). Doing sinus massages around the sides of the nose and wiping the goo often will help. Worst case scenario, baby has to have a tear duct surgery after the age of 1. For now, just follow it up with the pediatrician. This is not an uncommon issue in many newborns. Mine had the issue, and it has gone away after only 2 weeks.

  • Oh here's another one.  If you get a cut or scrape, put milk on it.  Breastmilk has a high white blood cell count which is supposed to speed up the healing process.  when DS stump fell off and bled a little I put a drop or two of my milk on it and let it dry.  Its scabbed over almost right away.  Also if you have a skin condition like Psoriasis or eczema it helps that too.  Can't believe I forgot to mention these, and I call myself an esthetician. Shame. lol
:open_mouth:yay! So trying on my psoriasis. Ds has a tad bit of cradle cap, wonder if it would help?
  • How about on baby acne? Anyone try that?

my DD had a bit of baby acne. I Googled what would help and sure enough breast milk popped up as a cure. I put it once or twice on her face and it did seem to help. I'm not sure if it was a coincidence or not since my ped. said baby acne goes away.
I heard breast milk heals pink eye too.
