Flip baby, flip!!

Hey ladies. I do not post/ comment very often but I am hoping you ladies could put my mind at ease. I am 35 weeks and 1 day and my baby is still in a breech position. I had my doctor's appt yesterday and my doctor felt around and says she still thinks he is breech, I have an U/S on Tuesday to confirm. My question for you ladies is, have you had experience with this and when should I begin to freak out. I've heard many babies will wait until the last minute to turn, but my doctor says she would schedule a cesarean at 39 weeks if baby hasn't turn by around 38 weeks. She also said we could discuss doing a ECV but I have a less than 50% chance of it working because this is my first baby so my uterus may be too tight. I also don't know if its worth possibly having to do an emergency cesarean any ways. At this point I'm hoping he flips on his own and I don't have to worry but you never know. I also was going to do some at home exercises but I didn't want to do any yet, until we know for sure he is still breech. Sorry I know this was a long post. :) Thank you all for any advice you have!!

  • I haven't done this, but I have known one mom who had success in getting baby to turn with acupuncture (not sure how that works though), and a couple others have had success going to their chiro to help baby turn. I'm not sure if they would work- but they could be things worth trying if your getting down to the wire and want to avoid a c section.

  • I'm only 33wks but facing the same thing. DS has been frank breech every US appointment since 20 wks. My OB scheduled a c/s for 39 weeks if he still hasn't flipped. I am one of those women that is A-Okay with a c/s.
We have an US at 36 weeks to see how he is.

  • I've read about the acupuncture, my husband doesn't think it would work but I would try anything. I really want to have him naturally if at all possible. I'm just going to have to convince the hubs. Unfortunately or insurance won't cover a chiropractor or acupuncture. I think that is why he is leaning away from it. @rubredvelvet

This little stinker was head down at 30 weeks and then flipped to breech at 31 and stayed that way haha. He is just a little confused. Hope everything goes well for you!!

  • I won't know 100% what position the baby is in until 36 weeks. That is the appt. where the OB checks the cervix and does the GBS test. She also checks the baby's position. I feel like he is transverse right now due to where I can feel movement but is that still even possible with how big the babies are at this point?
  • I took pregnant water aerobics, and the instructor said a LOT of babies turn from breech to head down doing certain water activities. If you have access to a pool, I would say try that! I think one move was while in the water, spread your legs and jump from one foot to the other. I knew one girl in class who's baby turned afterwards.

Now, it could be the babies turn naturally and water aerobics had nothing to do with it. But I would try if my baby was breech.

  • -lurking from July-

Spinningbabies.com has been a great resource for me. My baby was always head down then the past two ultrasounds showed  him/her to be frank breech. As of Tuesday, my Dr. think baby's flipped, but I won't have another ultrasound until July 6 to confirm. Spinningbabies has a "flip a breech" page that I used for about a week until I thought baby flipped. Now I use the daily/weekly activities page to encourage baby to stay head down and get into good position for birth. I'm 36 wks today.
  • I just want to tell you an anecdotal story because maybe it'll help put your mind at ease? A lot of the ladies above gave great advice to try!
My neighbor has 4 kids and two of them were breech until very close to the end. With the first breech baby, she actually went in for an appointment where they were going to try to flip the baby (not sure what that procedure is called) and when she arrived, they realized he had flipped on his own, and that was at around 37-38 weeks. Her second breech baby just kept flipping back and forth but ended up head down a little after 36 weeks (that one was born early at around 37 wks).
I don't know the statistics around how often babies flip after certain points in pregnancy, but if it can happen to her (twice!) then I don't see how it couldn't happen to others. If I were you, I'd try anything and everything - acupuncture, chiropractor, water aerobics, etc. - and at the end of the day, remember that IF you end up having to deliver a breech baby via c-section, that the important thing is that, at the end of the day, you will have your baby.

  • My baby was breech at 30 weeks, but now at 34 my doctor thinks he's flipped.

Definitely check out spinningbabies.com. They have a few exercises that you should only do if you're certain baby is breech, but there are other things all pregnant woman can do to help the baby get to the optimal birthing position. They feel good on my back anyway, so I'm still doing the daily exercises.

My backup plan was to go to a chiropractor for the Webster technique. It has a higher success rate than the ECV (I think around 80%) but I'm not sure when you need to do it. I think the earlier, the better.

Otherwise, my doctor said most of her patients don't do ECV anymore because of the low success rate. Only 3% of babies are breech by the time the woman goes into labor, so it's actually a pretty rare thing. Most babies will flip on their own. Good luck!!

I'm 33 weeks and since my baby has been breech this whole time she doesn't think baby is going to flip and I'm terrified of a c section and would like to go vaginally since I've done it before I hope there is some miracle and she decides to go head down! What's crazy to me us that they say there is such a small percentage of breech baby's I believe 4% but I'm seeing it a lot and most say baby usually flips toward the end but even my sister had a c section from a breech baby
  • I'm in the same boat - 32 weeks and DD still hasn't flipped. I'm also pretty sure that she is transverse as well - which is making for a pretty crazy looking baby bump! I have an US scheduled for 34 weeks to check again and then doc says she will schedule a CS for 39+1. I've been doing a few of the spinning babies exercises and washing my kitchen floor on all fours (old wives tale). Thinking about trying acupuncture at like week 36/37 if she still isn't flipped. Anyone on here have a successful ECV? With the success rates so low, I'm not sure I even want to try it....
  • With DS, he was breech the whole time. They told us there was a small chance he would flip since he was large and it was my first pregnancy. We tried a Version at 39w2d. It was the most painful thing I've gone through, even with an epidural, but I'm glad I did it. I really, really, really didn't want to have a c-section. I did what I could but flipping him just wasn't in our cards. Like @1faceinacrowd said, in the end, you'll still get to meet your baby. Do what you need to do to feel comfortable and let whatever happens happen. Easier said than done, I know.

Good luck and hopefully something will work for you!
  • My son was breech up to the end and I was told a version would not likely be successful. I tried moxibustion, chiro, yoga, acupuncture etc. come
to find out I had a little septum that was preventing him from being able to flip. So in response to your question, don't freak out. Just accept that a c-section is not the worst thing in the world and if baby flips, great. If not, that's ok because you have the option of a c-section. Imagine if you lived somewhere where you couldn't get to adequate medical care and have a safe section. Just trust your doc and I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

  • My baby was head down then at my 33 week appt had turned breech. I went back today for my 35 week appt and baby is back head down. The past couple days I spent a lot of time on my hands and knees moving back and forth and swaying... Also on the exercise ball. Something worked
  • Thank you everyone for the advice. My phone is temperamental about letting me on the app sorry this is coming so late. Good luck to everyone with breech babies. I'm sending positive thoughts your way!!!

  • Reviving this thread...I just had my 36 week appointment today and baby girl is breech! Has anyone had any success getting their baby to flip using any of the spinning babies techniques? And/or has anyone tried an EVC? I'm bummed that she's not in the right position! I was really hoping for a vaginally delivery, but realize I may have to come to terms with plan B.
  • I just had my 38 week appointment with my mfm. Baby is still breech and he doubts he will turn. He really wants to try version on Tuesday followed by induction but I'm not sure. I have finally accepted c section as my fate. Spinning babies didn't work for me. I was hopeful that it would work but I am excited that I get to meet baby on Tuesday regardless!

I'm going to be talking to my OB about a version at my appointment next Tuesday, but I'm concerned about the risks vs success rate, especially since I'm a FTM. In the meantime I'm trying all the spinning babies exercises, moxibustion, and anything else I can find! It's probably too late at this point, but what the heck...may as well try! Good luck next week @slycat! So exciting you get to meet your baby!
  • That's exactly why I'm not crazy about version. I'm a FTM as well and the thought of that pushing and pulling stressing baby out really freaks me out!  I have to make a decision by tomorrow but I'm leaning towards c section.  Most definitely do not give up on spinning babies. Many people have success with it. I unfortunately have a 10cm fibroid that may prevent baby from turning but I really hope it works for you. Good luck @LAMurray808!
