Safe to take a trip?

Hi everyone!

Just a quick question and your thoughts. Would it be safe to take a trip to the cottage. I would be around 35/36 wks at that time and it's about a 4 hour drive from home. I'm a FTM so not sure what to expect since I guess you never know now when baby can come?

  • Ask your doc.  Some docs have more liberal travel policies than others.  It also depends on how your pregnancy has gone from the docs perspective (which we have no idea about).

  • I'm going on our yearly trip upstate when I'm 36/37 weeks.  It's about a 3 hour drive from our house, 3.5 from the hospital I would prefer to deliver in (about an hour from Albany, if necessary).  I'm a STM and I'm not worried about it.  If he comes while we're up there, so be it!  I'm going to mention it to my OB, but even if they tell me not to go....too bad, I'm going lol.  If we don't go every year we lose our week.  Not worth it to us to lose our week for something that is unknown.  If he was already born and in the NICU or there were other serious complications with the pregnancy, then that would be a different story, but so far we're all healthy and there's no reason I can't plop my pregnant butt on a beach for a week and watch the waves.  I'll miss an OB appt, but again, I don't have any conditions that I feel are cause for concern.

  • Thank you for the tip's! I've been pretty good with traveling throughout the pregnancy taking flights to the US in late 1st/2nd trimester and also a trip to Europe during late 2nd / start of 3rd trimester.

I will definitely ask my OB though what he thinks :)
  • My husband has to go to MOS school in California (I'm in GA), I wanted to do a weekend visit around 37/38 wks. Is that just too far even for 3 days? I only wanted to visit because I don't think he can leave the state once he's started.

Sounds like that would require an airplane trip.  Most airlines have a policy against pregnant women flying past 36 weeks..Sometimes you can get around it with a note from your doctor. I would talk to your OB/midwife.
  • yes if it's an airplane you need to check their policy usually a note works for 36-37 but once it's 38 weeks I don't know if they allow it but you can check on their policy page depending on the carrier.
  • Alright, thank you ladies @terezakatarina @liljabee
