Trying to Get Pregnant

Newbie with a TTC/BCP ???

HI ladies I'm new to the bump, DH and I are ready to start a family. I just finished my last pack of BCP and we had planned to TTC immediately.

But some people are telling me we should wait till I've been off BCP for a few months before we start. What's the general cconsensus around here?

Re: Newbie with a TTC/BCP ???

  • Start charting now, but be aware it takes your body awhile to regulate after BSP up to a year.  I started TTC right off of BCP, it can't hurt, but it might not happen asap. GL!

  • I say ask your doctor.  Mine wanted me to wait a month or two just to make sure my cycles were, "normal," (ie, that I was ovulating).  I've heard many others who were cleared to start TTC right away.  GL to you!!

  • I've heard that you should wait just because it can be frustrating those first few months off of BCP because you may not be regular.  Start charting now, and take a PNV if you plan to start trying right away.  GL to you!
  • The only thing my doctor told me was to make sure I was taking a PNV (or one with lots of folic acid) at least 3 months before we started trying.

I would recommed www.fertilityfriend.com - LOTS of good info there for ya.

    Good luck.

  • Thanks ladies, I've already started the PNV and I haven't decided whether or not I even want to chart, so it seems like we are good to go.

I also have a Dr. appointment for early Feb.

  • Charting will help you keep your sanity, because it's very likely that your cycles will be nuts for a while.

That being said, I say go ahead and try if you're ready - I have a close friend who got pregnant the month after she went of BCP. GL!

  • We were no longer TTA when I went off the pill, so technically I guess that means we were TTC right away.?

Got pregnant in 2nd cycle (1st cycle was 6 weeks) and things have been fine so far. About a year ago my gyn told me that when I was ready to TTC that I should go off the pill, wait for my next period, and then go for it.?
  • I came off the pill a couple of months ago and waited one cycle before ttc (we used condoms in the meantime).  My dr. had wanted me to wait to have one or two real periods before actively trying but it was for the purposes of accurately calculating the due date.  There really isn't any reason why you can't start right away.  I hadn't been planning on charting until I found this site and can't imagine NOT charting.  Especially when coming off the pill, charting will help you to understand when and if you are ovulating so you're not playing the waiting game if your first cycle is longer than anticipated.

  • My doctor told me to go off three months before TTC. Other doctors and people on this board might suggest differently. I'm only just now starting to get back to more "normal" cycles - definitely plan to chart so you can make sure you're Oing and timing everything correctly.

  • When I told my dr. that DH and I were TTC, he scheduled a pre-concpetion visit, where they did special bloodwook to test my thyroid, whether my MMR (rubella) vaccine was still working, and whether I was a carrier for cystic fibrosis. My dr. does this for all women, and I was glad b/c my thyroid numbers were abnormal, so I need to get them right before we can TTC as thyroid problems can lead to an increased chance of miscarriage.
