Asthma and allergies nursing benefits?

I nursed dd1 until she was 3.5 years old. I was so proud to have given her the best start in life. Her health was the proof I felt of a job well done. She had no major illness and had never had antibiotics. She had one cold, I'm not kidding. Almost one year to the month she suddenly has been diagnosed with asthma and is allergic to several indoor and outdoor allergens it's a list!. And is on several different meds for it! It's breaking my heart to have to medicate her so much. What the hell happend? Did nursing just mask all the symptoms she had all along? Did the well of antibodies from me just dry up? Has anyone else experienced something like this. I'm nursing ds2 right now and I do wish I could pump for her but I never have been able to produce much more than an ounce or less above nursing on demand with either kid. I posted this on the breastfeeding board but I have been here so long I'd like some feed back from you guys too.

I'm not exactly sure the science behind allergies or how breast feeding affects them. Allergies and asthma are hereditary. And from personal experience I was a breast fed baby and I have some pretty severe seasonal and environmental allergies. I never had any symptoms until I was probably 7 or 8 years old.

  • I'll second PP. I have very bad seasonal and environmental allergies and was also exclusively breastfed as a baby. Also, from what a naturopath just told me, the baby gets all antibodies within first 6 months and then practically none after. In my opinion, you did the best thing you could for your babe and it was bound to happen no matter what you did. Since she is older, have you tried local honey? I find it helps me a lot if I eat it every day bc it contains all the local pollens. Just a thought.

I've heard the same thing about honey but haven't tried it yet
  • I was breastfeed until almost 2 years and I have no allergies or asthma but neither do my sisters who were only BF until 6 months...

I'm lurking from March but it's absolutely untrue about no antibodies after 6 months of nursing. However, this isn't addressing the OP's question so I'll pipe down now

My husband was EFF since he was born and has no allergies. I was BF until 6 weeks and then FF. No allergies. None of my siblings have allergies and they were breastfed until a year. Don't be hard on yourself! You did an amazing job with her and you will do the same your LO. As PP said it can be hereditary. Or its just how she is. I can understand its heartbreaking to see her suffer with allergies but don't blame yourself for giving her a great start.  She can grow out of them as well.
  • I'm the youngest of 6 all breastfed 1 year plus and every single one of use have seasonal allergies! Don't be hard on yourself, I think unfortunately it can tend to be a lot more hereditary for those. But on the other hand I've got a great immune system and can drink water from a lot of "shady" places without a tummy issue where others are not so lucky ;)
