Tailbone pain

I've been having the worst lower back/upper glute pain this pregnancy! Never had this with my 1st. My tailbone constantly feels sore.... After sitting for awhile it's hard to walk until my body loosens up a bit. Sitting on a heating pad has been my small relief... Anyone else??

Re: Tailbone pain

  • Recently if I sit or lay down too long it's really painful to walk, I get shooting pains in that area.  It takes a bit for the pain to go away.

  • I had horrible tailbone pain with dd1.  It had to do with where she positioned herself, posterior presentation and resting on my tailbone.  It ended up causing horrible back labor.  I haven't had it this time around but I looked up the spinning babies website to get excercises to try to prevent it from happening again.
  • Yessss we had to sit in these awful uncomfortable chairs at birthing class. By the end most of the mamas would be rolling around on the birthing balls (yoga balls). I definitely suggest getting one! They are cheap off amazon and sitting on them is good for posture, good for baby positioning, feels comfortable, and a great tool to labor at home before the hospital!
  • I'm dealing with the tailbone pain this time around as well. Sitting, standing, laying down it doesn't matter it just aches. Sitting for a long period does make it worse. I'm about to give in and buy and exercise ball or something to sit on instead.
  • So I actually fractured my tailbone about 8 years ago tubing on the lake. My doctor at the time said I would likely fracture it again during labor? I've always remembered this and hoped it wouldn't be true. But, lately I haven't been able to sit on hard surfaces for any amount of time.
I can't imagine having a fractured tailbone again after the baby gets here!
  • @Hannah0726 I fractured mine and three vertebrae while sledding five years ago and it didn't even cross my mind that re breaking was a possibility!
  • @kristynmac I keep forgetting to bring it up with my doctor. I'm not sure if she needs to be aware or if it matters. I don't know if there is anything they can do to prevent it if it does happen.
  • Yep, tailbone/hip/glutes pain here since like 6 weeks, and weekly chiropractor and twice a month massages haven't really solved it.  It's definitely a lot worse since I hit 34 weeks.  Sleeping is terrible because any way I lay hurts.
  • Mine is more my lower back than my tailbone, but I've definitely had a lot of pain down there. It is difficult to walk after I've been sitting for a while. I started seeing a chiropractor and it has helped a lot. She told me not to use a heating pad, but to ice instead. She said the heating pad will feel better initially, but it will do absolutely nothing for inflammation. I've been icing my lower back a couple times a day (most days) for a few weeks and it has seemed to help.

If it healed normally,  I would think you wouldn't be at any more risk than anyone else. Generally scar tissue is stronger than the initial bone that was there. However,  definitely mention it to your ob!
  • @darlingc Really hoping this is the case! Thanks for the info.
  • Mine- Tailbone after sitting for too long. Lower back/glutes after being in bed too long. I feel best the days I am most active. Walking is great! PP mentioned birthing ball.. that sounds like a great alternative to sitting in chairs for long periods of time.
  • Started getting tailbone pain yesterday! Possibly because I've been sitting with my legs elevated because of bad swelling :(
  • Had a Dr appointment yesterday and brought this up. They asked if I also had any pain urinating or front pelvic pain (no for me). So, of course it's just the added pressure of carrying the baby. They recommended stretching, tylenol if needed and ice or heating pad (whatever felt better for me).

I feel it most after working out, so just trying to the above after. I teach fitness and my higher impact classes is when it bothers me most (post workout), I also teach yoga 4x a week so I am being selfish and doing alot of pigeon poises and glute/back stretches which helps.
