Baby acne

I couldn't find anywhere that discussed this specifically, so I apologize if it's a duplicate.

My LO erupted in baby acne at 4 weeks. Like covering her cheeks, all over her scalp, the works. It is finally tapering off at almost 6 weeks - she gets a couple new spots here and there, but not the awful pizza face like before.

But the skin on her cheeks hasn't healed yet from the bad breakout. It's kind of rough and scaly? I've been putting a bit of lotion on it and that helps some. I tried coconut oil but I have serious sensory issues with oiliness and I cannot handle it when she's all gross. (I forgot once and kissed her head and wanted to claw my lips off. I need to be able to kiss my baby!)

Anyone else go through this? I was wondering how long it takes for the scaliness to go away and her pretty soft baby skin to come back. Or if there's anything I can do to hurry it along. Mama wants to schedule some baby photos!

Re: Baby acne

  • The scaliness on the scalp is more likely cradle cap? My LO had a combo of cradle cap (still not completely resolved) and baby acne (mostly resolved, just a bit of dry skin left) which reached it's max also between 4-6 weeks. Coconut oil isn't awesome for sensory issues, but it's done wonders on our litte guy's face. I put a very thin layer and find it's usually dry within 20-30 min

Not sure if you're BFing but I put breast milk on DS's face for baby acne and any scratches he inflicts on himself. It has anti-microbial properties and doesn't dry oily :) he hasn't had baby acne since he turned a month old. He's 8 weeks this week.

If it's cradle cap, then I use coconut oil. Moisturize with coconut oil for 20 minutes, wash off with a soft bristle brush to remove flakes, then apply a thin layer. Luckily, his hair returns to normal after a day, only 24 hours of oiliness.

ETA: I've only ever used water, coconut oil or breast milk on his face. I've heard lotion isn't good for their skin at this age.
