TTC After a Loss

Zika worries

I posted this on the wrong forum first.... whoops!

So guys I am suppose to start Clomid tomorrow and I have an HSG planned for in about a week. However, I just read that there are cases of Zika in the places I will be traveling to at the end of July and first part of August and I am flipping out a bit. I am going to talk to my doctor, but I wanted to see thoughts of others ttc. I want to start the clomid, but if I did conceive I wouldn't know until I am out of the country. I am going to be in Puerto Rico and Barbados, only in the airports, but will be staying in Dominica ( not the Dominican republic)  for two weeks.

Re: Zika worries

  • I would definitely speak to your dr about your travel plans before ttc. My dr advised me not to travel anywhere south, there is so much still unknown. And I've heard to avoid ttc for 3 months following a trip to places affected by Zika.

I'm going to be honest, I haven't followed the Zika stuff much. Is it in FL?  Is FL a risky area?

It's not in Florida or anywhere else in the US to my knowledge. I believe the only US cases are related to travel and sexual transmission. If it were me, I would go to Florida. It's not like ladies in Florida aren't pregnant as well. Just use bug spray and be smart. I went to Florida last year and didn't have a single bite without using spray.

Zika is a real threat and if it is present where you'll be traveling, your doctor will make recommendations for you.

ETA: Florida would be the most likely region to see it if it hits the US mosquitoes at all, so I thought I should add that tidbit.
  • Yea same as PP's said- I'm freaked out and depending on how things go this Summer ( will keep an eye on it) I may cancel a trip to South Carolina end of Summer.

  • My parents live in Orlando and my mom swears she has never even seen a mosquito in Orlando. I'm not sure if I believe her completely, but I do know that in the winter the mosquitoes are fairly dormant in Florida.

I agree with PP, just be smart about US travel. There has been NO cases of documented transmission in the continental US so far, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened yet.  If you are traveling where the Zika carrying mosquitoes live, wear your insect repellent when you are out doing things outside. I don't think that there is any reason to freak out.

@Cmckenzie Definitely speak to your Dr. I am afraid he/she will probably advise you not to travel to the Dominica or to stop TTC. My H and I went to Puerto Vallarta 2 weeks after the CDC issued the first travel advisory, there wasn't a single case of Zika reported within 100 miles of our resort, yet my Dr advised us to stop TTC.

Zika is totally not worth messing around with.

The CDC has a website that tracks zika activity in the US. Last I looked there were about 250 cases, all contracted out of the country. The risk here is low, I should have clarified that refusing to travel anywhere south of where we live (DC) is purely an expression of my irrational BSC. Well, that and the fact that it gives me an excuse not to spend the bulk of my vacation time visiting family in Florida again... ;-)

ETA: I'm also paranoid about things that are "low risk" considering that, statistically, my chances of losing 4 pregnancies in a row were supposed to be low, too :-/

  • Don't worry @MissPrint1219 we all have our flavor of super speshul BSC!  ;)
  • I am gonna have a chat with him! I don't want to put any possible pregnancy at risk. I am so glad I'm not the only person worried about this ( some people think i am crazy)! Honestly I don't blame you for not wanting to travel. I will be wearing bugs spray like a second skin!
  • @MissPrint1219 i don't think you're being BSC at all. my own dr advised my not to travel anywhere south (I live in NY) and yes that is probably a bit extreme, but zika is a terrible virus and to me, simply not worth the risk for a vacation right now. I might feel differently if I lived in a southern state but I don't so I plan to follow dr orders, at least during summer months. my BIL is an ER dr is south carolina and said his hospital was having a big conference about zika this week so I'm happy to share what he tells me.

i'm really not that type to freak out about this sort of thing but I think i'm taking this really seriously because of how badly it can affect a baby. everyone should do whatever they are comfortable with.

  • Also it's important to remember that zika is also sexually transmitted. The WHO is recommending that anyone how travels to high risk areas have protects sex for at least 6 months if they are planning for or if there is a chance of pregnancy. They are also saying that if a man travels in a high risk area that he have protected sex with his pregnant wife for the entire duration of her pregnancy because they just don't know how long it will stay in their system. It's more likely that people will get zika sexually than it is that you will get bit by a zika mosquito.

  • Between zika and the sea lice (EWWW) I think traveling is a no go for a bit!
  • I too freak out about Zika and DH thinks I am nuts. We have a wedding in Florida at the end of July and even though I know it isn't there yet according to CDC some part of me can't just help thinking it might be. I already loaded up on bug spray and plan to wear it the whole time, we will only be there three days (Friday to Sunday) so I am hoping with the short stay it will be less of an issue. As I posted in the mental health board though I am wishing for anything to make it so I can't fly to this wedding but that is another crazy.

  • DH and I are going to Tennessee next week and I am a little bit nervous since that is South for us ( we live in NY). But since there have been no cases in the continental US I feel fairly confident that their should not be an issue. But I still plan on loading up on the bug spray just in case.

  • We are skipping my brothers wedding in the Dominican Republic in 4 weeks because of Zika. All of this came out right after or first BFP so we booked our trip with insurance at that time. My doctor wrote a note because they agree going is not worth the recommended 6 months after to be benched. Thankfully my brother knows about 2 of our 3 losses and completely understands.

DH was the one to really push us to cancel. He didn't want any more anxiety and stress over "what ifs" by being there

I live in KY so if it was in TN, I'm screwed. Lol.

I totally understand the "what if" anxiety. My neighbor's son will most likely be competing in the Olympics this summer and I had the (admittedly bsc) thought that what if he got infected, visited his mom, got bit by a mosquito and the mosquito bit me. I'm telling you, my brain gets weird quick :-/

  • I'm in New Orleans right now for work. When I first loat my pregnancy in March mg doctor said to wait until after this trip to the again but then I saw her again a few weeks ago and she said NOLA was fine and is my schesuled trip to Hawaii in the summer. I would just stay in contact with your OB who will be most up to date on recommendations.

I haven't seen a singlw mosquito here this week.
