Period returning ?!

Hey ladies, I'm a FTM who has been feeding baby formula and breast milk. A little more formula than Bm. I was wondering when period should return? I heard if breast feeding baby I wouldn't normally have one. Well, Saturday I started cramping and aunt flow decided to pop up. I just wanted a little info. I know everyone's different. Thanks !

Re: Period returning ?!

  • It just depends. With my first, she was exclusively formula fed from day one and I didn't get a period for 6 months! This one was breastfed the first few days and now exclusively formula fed (he's almost 9 weeks) and my period started two days ago

  • Once the lining in your uterus reaches the right thickness, it signals to your ovaries to ovulate. Breastfeeding can block some of the signals that are responsible for the lining thickening and the ovum ripening, but it doesn't always (even if you're EBF--some women return to normal cycles immediately). Since you've already had a period, you should probably consider yourself a reproductive over-achiever!
  • Thanks for the info... I'm currently taking the birth control that doesn't have hormones in it. I guess it's called the mini pill. Should that still be ok for a contraceptive ? Just curious

  • This happened to me about a week ago . I cried (don't laugh) I was so scared it would affect my milk but knock on wood were still going strong ! Hugs aunt flow can be a bitch !

That was my next thought...  I was scared it would affect me pumping or breast feeding. I already have a limited supply :/

  • The minipill has a very low dose of progresterone in it (regular pills usually have types of both estrogen and progesterone. The higher dosages and estrogen can really Impact breastmilk supply). As long as you're taking it at the same time every day, you should be set!
  • My doctor said the minipill goes down to 95% effective if you stop breastfeeding.  He didn't say anything about the effectiveness dropping for any other reason.

  • I also EBF and I got my period at 6 weeks pp
  • Yep, I got mine at 6 weeks, too...totally unexpected and unwelcome!
  • I EBF and believe mine started yesterday at 5 weeks pp. I'm just happy everything is in working order.

I am 9 weeks PP and have not had my period return yet. I did have a teeny bit of spotting two days ago, but it was minimal. I keep waiting for the day that it just shows up.

    ETA: my baby is EFF
  • Ebf and I got mine at 7 weeks. Quit pp bleeding at 5. And my period lasted like 10 days. It's bs!

  • Ebf and 11 weeks pp and no period yet:))
  • 6 weeks pp tomorrow and my period came back yesterday :( so did not miss this.
  • I am 11 weeks pp and EBF and nothing yet. I have my prescription for the mini pill but have not filled it yet. It is effective if you take it at the same time every day. Your period can affect your supply for a few days, but it should go back to normal.

  • I am so glad I found this post. Thank you all for sharing this info. I am EBF and just got my period at 9 weeks pp. I was freaking out. With my first baby, it was nearly a year before my period returned. For those of you who have had periods already, do your babies sleep for long stretches? Say 5-6 hours? I have read that this is a factor for periods returning earlier. My baby sleeps a lot (almost to the point that it worries me). He was sleeping for 6 hour stretches through the night at six weeks. I don't even know how that happened. My older son was a live wire from day one. This little guy is a cool, calm, cuddle bug.
  • @silverwood   No my LO was awake every 3 hours to eat when my period came back.
  • @silverwood I haven't gotten my period back yet (almost 8 weeks pp) and my LO sleeps on average 7 hours straight for her first stretch
  • I am 11 weeks pp and EBF and nothing yet. I have my prescription for the mini pill but have not filled it yet. It is effective if you take it at the same time every day. Your period can affect your supply for a few days, but it should go back to normal.
I didn't know that! Thank you! I've been so worried because I got my period and a cold. I googled the cold and it said that could reduce supply, too. Knowing it's down from 6 oz per pumping session to 3 because of the combination of these two things makes me feel so much better.

  • Those of you on the mini pill or who have been on it before - are you/did you get your period regularly?
  • @DrillSergeantCat I have read many places (legit sources like kellymom) that recommend taking a calcium/magnesium supplement during your cycle to help combat that supply drop. I tried it when bf'ing DS1 but can't really say if it worked bc I got pregnant again after my first period. But I'll be trying it again this time when my cycle returns. This link was on kellymom and explains dosage: https://www.motherandchildhealth.com/Breastfeeding/Becky/menstruation.html
  • I am 18 weeks PP, my LO is 4 mo. I EBF. My period has still not returned. Has anyone elses? I have to say I'm so happy about no period and not being pregnant. This is great!!!

Mine isn't back yet either also 18 weeks pp.. Also ebf.... I spotted like it seemed forever after delivery though . Also not pregnant I got pretty sick a few weeks back and of course that's the first thing they checked for

edit: posted before I was finished
  • No period yet here, either. Baby boy is 14 or 15 weeks (not sure which anymore...) and EBF.
  • No period here either (18 weeks pp). I didn't get my period after my first LO til about 9/10 months pp, when DD drastically cut down on nursing sessions from eating more solids. Loved every minute of that!
  • I got my period at 7 weeks pp, we stopped bf at 6 weeks.  I had an IUD put in at my 8 weeks follow up and I swear I've had a period every 2-3 weeks since.  Insane!  They've been getting lighter each time so hopefully I can get to a more regular cycle soon.
  • I got my period at 8 weeks PP. I am 18 weeks PP and have basically had a constant period since then. It will last about a week and then will stop for 5 or 6 days and then it starts right back up again! I am on the Mini Pill. I formula feed during the day and nurse at night. (no pumping in between) Maybe that is why I can't get on a normal cycle?!? It is ruining our romantic life and it is so frustrating :( I don't have any pain or cramping so I haven't spoken with a doctor. How long can I possibly be this irregular?!
  • I'm 18 weeks pp I got IUD at 8 weeks pp I blead for about 2 weeks and haven't had anything since then.
  • 16weeks pp and ebf no period yet") ive been cramping alot every month for a week but no period. Also on mini pill
  • Little late.  I'm exclusively breastfeeding. Pp bleeding til 8.5wks. Had my period at 10wks. -c section momma btw
  • My LO is 4 months old tomorrow and my pp bleeding didn't stop until about 11 weeks.  I haven't gotten my period yet. With my first, I didn't get it until 10 months pp or so, which was awesome. I also ebf.
  • My LO is 19 weeks and I haven't really gotten mine yet. I had a teensy bit of spotting about a week or two ago for like an hour. I'm EBF and on the depo shot, the spotting was a few days before my shot had to be done again. I must say, after being on the pill for 7 years it's really nice not having to remember to take birth control, and it's even nicer not getting my period to boot!
  • My daughter was 5 months on the 23rd! I'm EBF. About 3 weeks ago I had two days of spotting. Thought for sure my period was returning but nothing since then. Any one experience spotting while EBF with no return of period?
  • I am a couple days shy of being 20 weeks pp, EBF, no period, no spotting, no B.C.
