I know this probably belongs in a symptom thread but this is treally concerning me. This is not my first rodeo I've done this twice before I  just wondering if anyone on 2 3rd ect pregnancy is having problems with hip pain?I never had this before. I honestly feel like I'm being pulled apart i cant walk if i do i limp, I took my kids to movies yesterday and i couldn't walk past the 30 minute mark it was so bad i had to call my dad to come get us since he had their other carseats. Baby is fine I just don't know if this is normal or something I should be worried about.

Re: Hip pain anyone?

  • TTM, I've been having issues with this. It feels like my legs are popping out of their sockets, and like my spine is trying to detach itself. My poor hips feel like their coming completely unhinged =/

  • I'm a FTM but I'm having it too. Not quite as sever but enough that I've had to limp a few times. I'm calling the chiropractor in the morning and making an appt!

  • Could it possibly be SPD?
This is my second pregnancy and that's what I have going on-- Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction. It feels like I'm being ripped apart, or my legs might detach. It also effects my back, making it extremely hard to walk.
It is completely normal, but it is something you either have to deal with for your pregnancy or you can also do physical therapy. It's from all the hormones relaxing your ligaments and some things might have been misaligned.

  • @mrskratt I'll have to look that up, because what you described is pretty identical to what I've been experiencing myself.
  • I'm glad I'm not alone if this keeps up I'll probably be immobile by August

FTM here, I am actually in physical therapy for hip/pelvic pain now. I initially thought it was SPD, but it turned out to be other pelvic related issues. I was having a lot of trouble walking, but after a few weeks of therapy it is getting better. I would definitely recommend talking to your doctor and see if they can recommend a good physical therapist to work with if it continues to bother you.
  • THIS. I can't get comfortable when I sit, lie down or stand up. It was worse today than ever- I'm hoping that maybe I just had a surge of hormones or something. I'm a STM and I'm seriously concerned about how I'm going to make it through the third trimester if this is already such a problem.
  • FTM and I'm having serious hip and back problems, although it's probably because of my weight. My doctor said she'll probably send me to physical therapy for it. A prenatal massage did provide some temporary relief and I also ordered a support belt that my cousin recommended since she had the same issues. I have a feeling I'll be off work sooner than I was planning.  :#

  • My OB said its a ligament in my leg that's being pressed on but I limp more than I don't right now! I think I'm more waddling lol... I sleep on my back with a pillow under my knees because on my side my hip is killing me and for some reason I get super nauseous.

STM and I have been dealing with hip issues too. Earlier on it was because one baby was sitting basically in my right hip socket, pressing on nerves there. Now I'm seeing a Webster certified chiropractor for hip/back pain, and that has been helping a lot. Also have been using Deep Blue rub, and having DH help me with some of the counter pressure and hip relaxation moves taught by the Bradley Method (probably the most helpful thing for me). Hope you find something that works for you!
  • @Mintz1982 STM here and I am experiencing the symptoms you are--extremely painful that leads to a limp. I assumed it was second full pregnancy symptoms but man it hurts.

  • According to my OB, SPD is more in the front of your pelvis (aka "lightning crotch"), whereas what I have runs from hip/butt to thigh. I have SI (sacroiliac) joint dysfunction. So it could be that too. Or sciatica. Get it checked out, they all have different treatments depending on what you have.
  • FTM but I am getting really intense (bring-you-to-tears) stabbing-like pain down my left hip/butt/thigh at times that I assume is sciatica, and my left hip this whole pregnancy has felt stiff and like it needed to pop but when I try to do a butterfly stretch the most I can do is like a 45 degree angle before I get pain that feels like it's just going to break. Not sure it's caused by the same thing as others or just from sleeping on it. The most advice I've gotten so far is just to use lots of pillows, which I already use a snoogle so I can't tell if there would be a difference but I guess could be helping it not get worse?
  • @uponastar16 there is a muscle that runs from your sacrum to the outside of your hip joint (piriformis) that gives a lot of pregnant women issues. In most cases it runs basically right next to the sciatic nerve, but in some people it goes over it and causes intense pain like that. I would try either a prenatal chiropractor or massage therapist! Hope that helps!
  • I have an appointment in an hour and will be inquiring about this.
  • I broke down and wore my support belt today. It seems to be helping a little bit. I will also be asking about this at my next appointment, but it's still a few weeks away!
  • Thanks for the suggestion @kmvisioli, I'm going to look into those options!
  • Oh yes. I have bursitis in my right hip anyways, but now it is the WORST it has ever been. Adding in a lot of pain in the right side of my sacrum and I'm thinking my piriformis muscle is to blame. So much pain!

  • I had terrible sciatica with my first baby and got acupuncture done. It worked well! After 3 treatments it was gone and hasn't come back in 4 years now. I do still get hip pain, I see a chiropractor when it's bad and do prenatal massage in my third trimester when it's usually at its worst.

  • Sounds like my SPD, which can manifest in the back of the hips, too.

  • I always like a visual for this kind of thing, so here you go if you're like me:

  • I'm a STM and having similar symptoms with back pain and having a hard time walking. At my last appointment I talked with my dr. about it. She said the second time around your body knows better what it's doing. It's everything relaxing and loosening to get ready for baby. She suggested some at home pelvic exercises and if that doesn't help therapy is the next step. She also said to try a belly band for support.
  • STM - I had hip pain with my first and saw a chiropractor, but nothing really helped. The pain still lingered for years, and I finally started looking into some PT. Because I'm a runner, I found these awesome exercises online and started doing them twice a week last year (or maybe whenever I remembered): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GLrKr54yA0

I've kept up with those exercises (maybe not as regularly as I'd like) in pregnancy, and I've also focused on doing a lot of squats/lunges. It may be uncomfortable at first, but if you strengthen your hips, it can make a huge difference.

Also, SNOOGLE! Best. Thing. Ever. :)
  • Donkey whips sounds like something dirty hahah. That video is awesome though. I'm going to try these later today!
  • I am feeling a little better with a little extra rest and some stretching. I am still not able to bend very well
