Long bones measuring short

I'm 32w2d and had an ultrasound today due to being AMA and having GD. I was told that baby's long bones, (arms and legs) are measuring a few weeks behind. The Dr. doesn't seem very concerned about it, saying the everything looks normal, just small. She also told me that it very likely could have something to do with my small stature. I'm only 4ft11. She wants me to come back in 4 weeks for another ultrasound to recheck the growth of those bones. Otherwise,  she said baby looks great and weighs about 3lbs 9oz.
Has anyone else ever had experience with this type of thing? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he hits a growth spurt very soon!  In the meantime,  I googled it.... not a great idea.. just makes, me worry more.

Re: Long bones measuring short

  • @ShanRum3  This is sort of a friend-of-a-friend thing, but my coworker told me that her sister-in-law had this. Her husband is a short but really stocky guy, and her babies measured short in their long bones. I think that can be a sign of dwarfism, which is why the doctor takes note of it, but in their case the kids just inherited their dad's build. If you're 4'11" that's probably the case here, too!

  • I have no advice other than not to google anymore! Lol. I'm a google freak and it probably makes my life 100X harder. FX that it's just what the doctor said and nothing to worry about!
  • I wouldn't worry too much.  I get Sono's every two weeks and one time he'll be in the 40th percentile and the next week he'll be in the 70th.  They all grow at different rates and someone has to make up the smaller end. Still sending prayers all is ok.
  • @ShanRum3 I am guilty of googling just about anything during my pregnancy.

Just last night, my left arm got really itchy so I started to scratch it. Then I googled, "random itchy arm 34 weeks pregnant," and got stories of how it could be a sign that my liver is infected. If at any point my body or parts of it randomly itch, I should get a blood test to rule out obstetrics cholestasis. If left undetected and untreated, my baby could die inside.

So I fell asleep thinking I now could very well have this condition which may result in a very, very unfavorable outcome. Ugh, the things we put ourselves through...thanks to Google!

And if it's any help for you to know, I was shocked when doc said baby's head is measuring at 37 wks as he measured on sono. I was worried but he said it's +/- few weeks so not to be concerned. My nana hurt seeing baby's head already 3 wks ahead in size!
  • I know I'm probably worrying for nothing. And I wonder if there is anything I can do to help him grow... like drink more milk, or something.  I know it sounds stupid, and hopefully he just takes after me and is little!
  • My best friend's baby was in the 6th percentile right up to week 35. Then all of a sudden, he had a HUGE growth spurt (which made her feel like hell) and he shot into the 30th percentile by week 37. Up to week 37, she was just stressing over the baby's small size and worrying herself sick. The point is, you don't have any control over what is going on in there, so just try to relax and trust that it will all work out.

  • It amazes me how they show our (and their dads!) characteristics already. Dh was almost 24 inches at birth, and less than 8 lbs. Looooong and skinny. Little guy is heading the same way - he's spot on for weight, and measuring ahead in length. I know its scary, but more than likely he takes after momma!

  • @AliKay20 I am guilty of googling too much also! Your story made me giggle though because yesterday morning I woke up with itchy hands randomly. I DID NOT google it only because I remembered my doctor talking to me about random itchiness. I knew if I searched anything I would be scared all day. My hands are not itchy anymore. I think it was dry skin.  ;)
  • @alikay20 and @jamiesc58 That's actually how I discovered cholestasis with my first.  Random itchy feet at night at 37.5 weeks and had my son at 38 weeks.  I've been internally cheering each week that has gone by this pregnancy without any itching. And then realized on Tuesday I was sort of itchy.  I'm so hoping it is just dry skin, swollen feet, sun but am still going to get blood work done this morning to find out for sure.

  • I went in for my appointment with my regular OB today, and asked his opinion on the results of the ultrasound from last week,  and he said he sees no reason for concern, as the baby is small in general,  and they only estimate him to be 6lb. 1oz. by 39 weeks. The MFM didn't actually tell us that tidbit last week.  I'm feeling a little better now after talking to my Dr.
  • The only real beneficial thing you can do is relax and make sure you are taking care of yourself, but I definitely understand it can be worrisome. As PP said, the percentiles can jump all over the place.  It sounds as though your baby is proportionally small as opposed to normal head and torso measurements with short extremities. The measurements so far for my baby were 40th, 60th, and than 31st percentiles.  My (male) MFM stated he "heard" that it's easier to deliver a slightly smaller baby, if you want to look at the bright side of things! :-)
  • @Nikkoli98 I feel much better after my talk with the OB. The MFM seemed pretty sure it was just a small baby, but I don't know her, so I wasn't sure how much she was really telling us, or NOT telling us to keep us from worrying. I have been through a lot with my OB (4 pregnancies, 1 being a loss) and I felt like I could trust him to give it to me straight! He told us we just want him to keep growing, and not fall farther behind, but otherwise, it's no reason for concern.
  • @ShanRum3 Good luck and I hope it goes well, Grow baby grow!
