Cradle cap/baby dandruff

Hello ladies! I was originally an April mom by due date, but ended up May 1, so I've been lurking between both boards a while now. My baby is almost 8 wks old, and just yesterday, out of the blue, ended up with a TON of what I describe as dandruff on her crown (back of head where hair swirls out). She did have a patch of yellow scaly skin on her eyebrows for about a week but it cleared up a week or so ago. I was thinking that was cradle cap. This spot on the back of her head is much bigger, white flakes that actually flake off when I brush her hair. The nurses at the hospital told us when she was born to brush her hair and shampoo regularly to prevent cradle cap. We have been bathing her every 2-3 days, along with shampoo, and brushing her hair 2-3 times a day when we remember. A friend suggested coconut oil to make it better, but I'm worried that will just add grease to the mess. Anyone have experience or advice?

We have cradle cap and I've been using coconut oil. Works great! Also put it on her face if she has the dry patches at her eyebrows still. My baby has that along with some baby acne and the coconut oil has done the trick.

  • Definitely use coconut oil and when you brush, go in gentle swirls to loosen the flakes from the scalp.
  • Coconut oil before you brush really helps loosen it up. You can wash her hair after!

  • We put coconut oil on and left it for 20 mins, gave him a bath with shampoo and brushed the flakes out. Afterwards, we put a thin layer of coconut oil on. His head was only greasy for a day then his hair went back to normal.
  • Brush? Do your babies have enough hair to brush or are we supposed to be brushing the bald heads? Lucine is pretty bald.  She doesn't have cradle cap, just a bit of dry skin so I just put some coconut oil on it. I think her dry skin is made worse by the winter and heaters leading to extremely dry air.

It's a soft bristle brush we got from the hospital, I think they used it on him for his first bath, we use it to brush off the dry skin flakes. They also gave us a comb but his wispy hair is not enough to comb lol
  • @Kurrant Holly doesn't have very much hair but she LOVES when I brush it. She smiles and coos with joy. I couldn't find a soft bristle brush anywhere so I ended ordering a Hip Peas brush for $8 from Amazon.
  • We had an issue with the dry flaky skin a few weeks ago, but a few days of coconut oil and it completely went away.
  • Yes, coconut oil is great. The mustela newborn shampoo also helps.
  • @ayeshaohara is LO licking your face?? Cute pic!
  • @charissadeats she sure is!!! She likes to suck on my nose. We discovered it by accident one day when she was getting hungry and we were playing and she started attacking my nose! Now we do it for fun. It's absolutely hilarious and feels so funny!
  • Thank you all so much! Hopefully we'll see results in a few more days!

We also do this too because it's super cute. Highly recommend you letting your kid suck on your nose for your entertainment hahah. I'm not sure how sanitary it is because our noses can harbor a lot of bacteria...strong immune system here we come!
  • My LO is 5 weeks and he occasionally gets dry skin on his scalp ... I just brush it everyday and shampoo every 2-3 days and it usually goes away the next day or so. I haven't used any oils or lotions yet.
  • Question about cradle cap. Does it smell bad? My baby's head smells awful...like stinky cheese. I've given him baths the last two days bc it's so bad but it doesn't help. I've tried the coconut oil brush thing but he doesn't really have flakes,,,,just the smell. My first didn't have this. Starting to get a little concerned. His two month apt is Tuesday so I can ask then...just curious if anyone else has this.

June mama. Had this issue with DD and it was because I wasn't getting behind her ears good enough in the bath. Breastmilk gets trapped back there and ends up smelling really bad.
