@texasmama2014 Maybe we should change the question from dentist to hygienist. I think I'd rather be a gynecologist, although I have a feeling there would be some very strange smells.
The idea of dealing with teeth freaks me out. My students know if they have loose teeth they are not to show me. But....I still think I would choose dentist.
Dentist. Even if you haven't had your teeth cleaned in a while--most people at least brush quick before their appointment and I am not sure that everyone cleans up the area before gyno appointments.
The reason I was even thinking about this is because I had to go to the dentist today. While I was waiting for my appointment I thought "I wonder how many people ONLY clean their teeth at their appointment every 6 months". Yuck!!! And when customers have bad teeth the bad breath smell is enough to kill! I don't know if I could do that on a daily basis. I am sure though, gynecologists have their own gross stories, I just feel it would be less common (or I hope it would be). I know that I take care of my teeth AND my southern region, but I am sure not everyone does.
Dentist. It was probably a good clarification to also suggest hygienist. I think my dentist spends about 60 seconds total looking at my teeth during most appointments. Then again, my husband broke one of his front teeth when he was in grade school and has had a number of procedures to fix it. He once lost his crown while we were out to eat, and I caught a glimpse of his filed down tooth. Yuck! Poor guy - I couldn't look him in the face the rest of the day. I'm gagging just thinking about the process of filing down a tooth. That part of being a dentist would definitely gross me out. But, I'd still pick that over gynecologist.
I hate the dentist, I hate everything about it. There's no way I could be in a dentist office every day, listening to the tools and touching people's teeth. I'd have to chose gyno, even though I'm sure that can be pretty gross too, but at least there's babies involved and that would be fun!
Without a doubt an OBGYN. Dentist to me would be horrible, and most people don't love their dentists. I actually really love my ob office and the ladies there. And I would imagine the percentage of internal things is not as high as one would think since they do lots of things. Compared to a dentist which pretty much is always dealing with the inside of mouths and such.
Gyno for sure. I've worked in ER and OR. I've never seen anything there that bothered me too bad, but I can't handle dirty teeth. I would probably be too judgy also. I see dirty teeth as a sign of laziness.
Man that is tough. I have an unusual fear of anything tooth related... Like I couldn't even pull out my own teeth when I was a child. It grossed me out so much. But then I'm not sure I could handle the sad side to being an OB. If I could be a non-teeth pulling dentist, I think I would go that route.
Dentist for sure. Even if things are smelly in there, you get to wear a mask. I've never seen an OB wear a mask and there have got to be some pretty rough sights and smells.
Also, you have to give some of the worst news at times... I can't imagine having to deliver that information.
@Bookhousegirl You make a good point with having to deliver bad news at times. Never really thought of it that way. But I'm still going with GYNO, just because of my past with dentists. CANNOT stand the sound of those whirring little tools of theirs. That and after you've been through oral reconstruction (jetski accident), I've had enough of being in dentist offices for the rest of my life.
Although, my dentist really is the best. He gave me a high-five and was super excited when I told him I was pregnant.
Considering more than just the gross factor, dentists have one of the highest suicide rates in the country (2.5 times as likely than the general population). To a lesser degree, so do physicians. OB/GYN's have one of the top malpractice premiums. They also have a fairly broad scope within a more narrow population, including cancer patients, and they do lots of surgical case. This usually also comes with a burdensome call schedule.
I think a dentist probably has a better lifestyle and less grossness, but I'd definitely go with OB/GYN. I think being a dentist would get pretty boring and I love the practice of medicine in general.
This is a tough one, but since work-life balance is very important to me and having random on call hours is something I definitely do not want, I would go with dentist. The thought of having to hear drilling through teeth on a regular basis is not appealing, but I suppose it's something I would get used to. I don't think I could deal with being a pediatric dentist. Just in my regular life, I've seen some kids with really screwed up teeth because their parents just don't take care of them. I think I would lose my job over that...
i would not be able to do either, i would probably puke, i am easily grossed out and i am pretty sure they encounter many things, you have to have a strong stomach for you to not throw up doing both of those jobs
Meh, neither one would gross me out I guess. My current job is probably in the same category though. I handle urine, body fluids, stool, and blood all day long. It sounds gross, but I think the body is fascinating with what we can tell from tests and exams.
I think if I had to work at a job where I was at a desk and computer all day, that would be my nightmare. I'd go stir crazy.

Dentist! My neighbor growing up was a dentist and he worked 3 days a week with a huge house and a summer home on ocean front property. Less blood, better hours and a great living. I never thought about @bookhousegirl's point but that is a great one. What's the worst you tell a patient, "you need a root canal." Cha-ching
