GD Check in 6.20

How are you ladies doing?
Anything new to share?
Good recipes that you want to send?

I've had a quiet week so I'm glad I've got nothing to share but I do have my first GD appt tomorrow at the hospital so hopefully that is uneventful as well!

Re: GD Check in 6.20

  • It has been 106 degrees here and all I want is ice cream and shave ice.   :'(

My numbers still seem to be on the high side even though the doc prescribed me Metformin so I'm hoping that I won't have to go to insulin.

I don't really have any new recipes to share this week, just glad it's summer so that I can focus on grilling proteins and having salads instead of wanting carb loaded comfort foods!

@Julia70286 how are you finding the Metformin? I was on that for about 3 weeks with my fertility doctor while waiting to take some tests and holy moly did it make me sick....granted I was also pregnant and didn't know, so that probably didn't help the situation, but ya not a stomach friendly drug.

@LauraPCOS and @Julia70286 - if you find that a med like that makes you sick, a lot of times, eating with the med will help keep the queasiness away :)
  • This is my second time having GD and for some reason this time I can not control my fasting number in the morning. The rest of the day I'm great. I've tried so many different evening snacks and nothing is helping. I have an appointment on Wednesday and I'm afraid I'll be put on meds for this.

I have my 1 hour test this Friday @25 weeks. super nervous, but I guess there's nothing I can do but wait and see what happens. With DD my GD was diet controlled. Hoping that if I have to go another round with this, I'll be able to stick with the diet for 3 months.

I thought I was going in for the 1 hour today, and apparently it was a 2 hour instead? I didn't know there was one between the 1 and the 3, and I never had the 1 alone. I'm nervous because  of family history, but I guess I'll find out on Thursday at my appointment.

  • Friday I failed the 1 hour test. This morning I went in for the 3 hour test. My blood sugar was too high to start the test. 132 fasting. They called my OBGYN and he diagnosed me with gestational diabetes. We are going to try to manage with diet and see what happens. My next appointment is in 4 weeks so hopefully there will be something to report by then.

So, I have a question. What is the GD appointments you go to? Is this with your OBGYN or another specialist. So far all I know is my OBGYN will start doing stress tests on the baby at 32 weeks.

  • My appts include uploading info from my glucose monitor to the nutritionist/diabetic counselor's computers for assessment, weight check (fingers crossed I gained something this time), and just a chat.  This next one on Wednesday happens in conjunction with a scan so it's more of a "how is baby handling GDM"

The GD appointments during my last pregnancy were with a perinatal Doctor. I had to send in a weekly log and meet every 4 weeks to monitor baby via ultrasound (extra pictures!) to monitor fluid levels and baby's weight. My doctor just prescribed the blood testing kit and deferred to the specialists orders.

@mkc3888 My one now is with a diabetes management center. The women is a certified diabetes nutritionist.

*edited - she is a nutritionist not a nurse like I originally thought

  • Thanks.  I guess we'll see where I am in 4 weeks.  That seems so long to wait to know if everything is ok.  I'm lucky to work with a dietician and NP that made me feel better about the lack of monitoring over the next 4 weeks.

  • @LauraPCOS I haven't had any issues on the Metformin, but I always make sure to take it with food. I was warned though that it does have a tendency to upset some people's stomachs.

  • This is my second pregnancy and second time having GD.  The first I was diagnosed at 13 weeks by my endocrinologist reading my logs and on insulin at 15 weeks.  This time I actually have a new endocrinologist, and my OB initiated the testing at 16 or so weeks.  I failed the 1 hour, and a week or so later failed the 3 hour.

My fasting number was and is the issue again this time.  So far, I'm managing my after meal numbers with  diet alone, although I see they are slowly creeping up.

I don't know if I was better prepared to work the diet this time or if it's because there are two babies in there with different nutritional needs than a singleton.  The perinatal group managing my case doesn't want to be as aggressive in managing since less is known about GD in twin pregnancies.

    Good luck to you all!

  • @JessK1014 Mine was the opposite. My fasting number was 90 and my after drink numbers were all in the 200! It's weird though because I haven't had a high reading since I started testing except for twice so I'm praying it stays that way!

At my appointment for the one-hour now. I don't remember the orange drink being so yummy! Could be because k didn't eat any breakfast, but it was sooooo good! LO is now kicking up a storm! Wish me luck y'all, I do not want to be testing my blood sugar 4x a day.
  • So I just found out I failed my one hour with a 153.  I have to do the three hour next week.  Does anybody have any insight as to how bad a 153 is?  I know anything above 140 is failing but I don't know enough about blood sugar levels to know whether the difference between 140 and 153 is super significant or not.  I'm just trying to figure out what my chances of passing the three hour are.

    Sigh.  This stinks.
