Infant gas/grunting it's killing me!!

My LO will be 3 weeks old Thursday and was sleeping pretty good. She's in our room and was being a typical infant waking about every 3 hrs to eat. Now as soon as we turn out the lights she's grunting as if she's trying to poop and crying out in pain (not hungry). She does this all night long I'm up every hour nursing, trying to burp and giving gas drops with no luck. I've tried her co sleeper and Rock and play nothing works. I'm sure there isn't much more I can do but let it pass is anyone else going through this? I'm thinking about moving her out of our room which I was really against but I need some sleep!

DS is just under 2 weeks and he's doing this too.  I feel bad for DH who has to be up at 5:30 every day for work but i'm not ready to move him out of our room yet.  He is def grunting from gas cause I can hear his little toots all night.  But he's not crying from pain so I let him work it out on his own.  As they get older they are better able to pass gas on their own and hopefully not be so vocal about it.  I do notice he gets extra gassy if he gets more foremilk than hindmilk.  His little farts will be greenish rather than the yellow. So I really put extra effort into making sure he really did drain a breast before switching sides and since I have a heavy letdown (also a cause of gas) I'll let it squirt in a towel before he latches on.  He's been much better the past couple days compared to the straight up screaming he would do.

We have the same problem and actually went to the pediatrician yesterday to make sure there wasn't another issue going on. The doctor suggested a probiotics to put in his bottle. I am nursing but pumped a bottle for him last night. You might want to look into that. He also said what skeins previously mentioned... If he was in pain, he'd be crying. Starting last night I didn't pick him up with every grunt and it worked out better for us. Good luck!
  • My LO usually only nurses from one side each feeding. I know gas is I preventable but I'm wondering if I should cut out dairy from my diet or if that would be effective.

    ****Box fail****

That's a huge possibility and I would say to definitely give it a try.  My entire family has had issues with dairy as babies so I've already started removing dairy from my diet even though I'm not due for 3 more days and will probably go late.
  • My pediatrician also highly recommends probiotics to reduce/eliminate all tummy issues. Since I'm ebf right now I mix it with a little filtered water and give it to her in a syringe twice a day.

    What probiotic do you use?

  • Have you tried tummy massage to make the gas escape? FTM here, but I've watched a friend do it, and it worked great.

  • my son had the same problem. He would only sleep an hour or so and be up to feed.
He is doesn't latch well so I almost exclusively pump and give him a bottle. This has actually made a huge difference. he now drinks about 4 oz every 3 hours, I put him on his stomach to burp him and no more grunting from the gas! So weird but I think when he was trying to latch, he was taking in too much air.
I still try to feed from the breast during the day and he tends to be more fussy afterwards.
  • In regards to gas has anyone tried gas drops and had success?  My friend gave me the little remedies drops to try and the reviews are extremely positive but in curious if anyone has tried then here?

    stuck in the box***
little remedies gas drops helped my daughter immensely!!! No joke, she would be screaming in pain and once I gave her the drops, it was a matter of minutes and she was fine.
My son has a little bit of gas (not as bad as dd) and I bought the generic cvs brand and it barely works.

  • @adiaz132003 I have tried them and no such luck. However, I think hers may be more than just gas. I am not eliminating dairy from my diet as well as have her in an acid medication. I will slowly start to reintroduce dairy in a week to see if it is in fact a dairy issue or acid reflux. My son had a milk allergy but I dis not nurse with him.
  • Thanks.  It's just hard cause I know it's mostly lower gas cause he grunts and farts all night. I wanna give him some relief
  • Ok I caved!  I just had to put him down. My arms needed a break. I figured cause he was asleep on me I'd be able to put him in his crib, nope he cried. I knew holding him wouldn't help the gas.  I felt so helpless. Gave him a binky and he was good for two minutes, then the grunting started followed by a cry then the binky then another cry. Finally after about 10-15 min of on again off again cries, he passed out asleep.  I felt so guilty that I made him "cry it out" but I had to walk away. I literally sat in the next room and cried too.  I know he only cried for a minute each time before he got quiet again but that minute felt so long and I never wanted to ever let him cry cause I know that babies always have a reason to cry.  I just felt like there was nothing I could do.  I'm praying these gas drops will help in the long run and maybe some gripe water at some point.  I know everyone says it's ok to walk away if you feel stressed but am I wrong to think that it's selfish of me to walk away because he's the one suffering?! *Sigh* this mom thing really has my emotions going up and down... rant over...
  • @adiaz132003 mommy guilt is terrible!!! But it won't be the last time you have to walk away and that's ok it's what you need to do. As far as the gas drops go i do notice they give her some relief after she eats especially on the side with the fast let down. Once you put the drops in his mouth if you blow in his face it forces them to swallow hope your little finds some relieve soon.. Hang in there

  • I have to go in a mommy time out about once a week, my older boys are 4 & 6 and sometimes you need a break just to recollect yourself and that's okay! It is harder when they are younger but sometimes you just need a moment. The gripe water helps my DD with her gas and she likes the way it taste so I don't have to mix it in a bottle. It's unflavored but she still likes it. I bought mommy's bliss but little remedies works also. Good luck and it does get better.
  • Jack Newman has great info on this topic in his book The Ultimate Book of Breastfeeding Answers.

Since I'd previously nursed my older two for a very long time, I didn't realize I needed a refresher course.  Luckily my sister in law passed along this book in a box of baby things - it was a lifesaver!  What you're describing was not my issue (baby was going like gangbusters, but I had pain), but I read the section on gassiness, colic, etc and there are some very good explanations & suggestions.  Might be helpful.
