What (clothing) did/will you labor in?

If it's not a silly question...
I was curious to see if anyone thinks about the clothes they labor and deliver in...comfortable, cute, accessibility...
Pretty sure, if you're in a hospital, you get the lovely tie in the back gown. (That's what I had the first go-around.)
But for the rest of us who have a choice/ use a birth center/ home birth??

Re: What (clothing) did/will you labor in?

  • I think it depends on if you want an epi. In the hospital last time I labored in a nightie from Walmart. Like $10 so I didn't mind tossing it after L was born.

  • I was buck naked last time! My friend gave me a birthing gown this time, but, only because I have it will I plan to wear it. Otherwise, I'd just see how it goes. I was in my camisole and comfy pants very quickly after delivery.

It wasn't my intention, that's for sure!! It was quite a primal experience and I truly didn't care that I was floundering around for all to see, I just wanted that baby out of me!! ;)

I labored at home in sweats. I wore the hospital gown even though I had a choice of whatever I wanted when I arrived. I just didn't see the need to ruin other clothes. Soon after birth, I took a long shower and put on yoga pants and a cami.

  • I labored in a hospital gown with ds1 and ds2 was an emergency csection. Planning a vbac and I plan to labor in a bandeau bra and maybe shorts, until it's time to push, if that's allowed.

  • Both times I labored in a bra and hospital gown.  I'll do the same this time.

  • I had a hospital birth without medication and labored in a short nightgown and robe instead of a hospital gown.  Wear what makes you feel comfortable.

  • I also didn't wear anything while I labored for 19
hours. I was also in and out of the tub, so that was part of the reason. The other part was I was so hot and didn't want anything touching me.

I second wear what makes you comfortable. I think cami and sweats are always good post delivery or a light nightgown/robe.
  • Going into labor I always wore a pair of my husbands sweats and one of his shirts I didn't like anything clinging to me... But once I was at the hospital I wore the gown with nothing under.  Wear what makes you comfortable.
  • I wore the hospital gown with DS and I will definitely be wearing something more comfortable this time. Probably going to go for a loose T-shirt during labor and a tank and sweats once the epidural wears off. I wish I had done it the first time around!
  • I wore a gown each time.. how could I resist those super sexy hospital johnnys?? But with my 3rd I was more active during my labor because I didn't get an epidural until much later.. so I kept a tshirt and pair of box shorts on while I was walking around and sitting on the ball.. when I was ready for an epidural of changed into the gown.
  • Anyone used a cute (amd probably totally pointless, but still) delivery gown from Etsy? More comfortable than a hospital one?
  • I labored in a cheap sun dress, it was august so minimal clothing was preferable.I ended up naked for most of labor and delivery anyway. I wouldn't spend a whole lot on anything I plan to labor in.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a gown from Etsy, but would still buy something cute (maybe, Walmart), in case I'm still wearing it for those quick just-after-birth photos with baby.
  • Interesting question. I used a hospital gown the last two times before laboring in the tub. I eventually ended up naked or mostly naked...I don't even remember. This time I'll have to ask the birth center if they provide anything or recommend anything.
  • Last time I basically just wore hospital gowns my whole time at the hospital.

  • I labored at a birthing center, and yes, I bought a delivery gown from Etsy. Didn't wear it for my actual delivery (I wore a hospital gown and a nursing sleep bra), but I did wear it afterward and it was super cute for pics, comfortable, made it easy for docs to check my epidural site because of buttons down the back, and overall I really liked it. Would do it again the same way.
  • Well after I started stripping clothes off in the hospital hallway they put a gown from the hospital on me and as soon as I had delivered my amazing nurse got my nursing nightie and robe so I could put that on before people came in to see baby. Honestly if I was at home if be in something loose and comfortable or naked!
  • I was in the hospital gown the whole time I was at the hospital. It never crossed my mind to bring anything else before
  • For labor and birth I was in a hospital gown. After I was just in sweats and a cami. Will probably do the same this time.

  • I admire those who said they'd bring something nice like a birthing gown for pics and stuff. I hate getting pics taken unless it's pre planned and I got my hair and makeup done and get to wear something fancy. No way hospital pics of me here. I will insist my family take hospital pics of the baby instead and we will wait until our newborn shoot to take family pics. Along similar lines, no one will be allowed to film me during labor. So most likely I'll be wearing a plain hospital gown.

I get a little caught up worrying about how I look for some of the pics my hubby snaps after the birth when I am holding the baby. I guess people will understand if we don't look that great. Labor and delivery is my equivalent of running a marathon!
The prettier gown might be more for my and some others state of mind. If you wear something pretty, you are more comfortable, more at home, etc...
  • I honestly hadn't even thought about it and just assumed I'd wear a hospital gown. Still probably will go that route so that I don't end up ruining anything I care about but I'll probably bring some nightgowns or oversized t-shirts or something for after delivery. If anyone wants to come see me and baby in the hospital there are just going to have to deal with me looking how I'll look. I'm not going to bother getting all fancy. I just want to be comfortable.

Depending on circumstances I probably wouldn't bat an eye at being naked during labor or delivery tho. I'm pretty comfortable nude when it's not inappropriate.
  • I wasn't given the option - hospital gown and hospital gown only - despite the fact that I walked a good bit during labor, having chosen the non-meds route. I also managed to push a bit too aggressively and found myself in that hospital gown for the rest of my stay, forbidden to take a shower until the day I was leaving (they said I passed out the first night in the bathroom). That hospital bag didn't get touched.  :/

  • Started off in a hospital gown and sports bra (these puppies CANNOT be left hanging), but I had a very fast, intense med-free labor. I felt like I was on fire I was so hot and sweaty so I kept ripping the gown off! Had to put it back on a few times when they were moving my rooms but as soon as I was in my delivery room it was off and stayed off, so sports bra only! I can't believe how much I truly didn't care about my business on display.
  • I plan to give birth in a hospital, so most likely I'll be in an ugly hospital gown once i get there. I don't mind much. I planned to save the cute robe for after my son's birth, anyway. Honestly if the gown begins to annoy me, I wouldn't be surprised if I end up ripping it off and I end up nude, or nude except for a nursing bra.
