Elliot vs Elliott

so husband and I have decided on Elliott for this kid. We now can't decide if we should spell it with one or two Ts. I'm on team double letter because I have seen it spelled that way more often. He says he likes one T. We have checked name boards and things and they are pretty much neck and neck. Since he doesn't want to share the name until baby is born, we can't ask/poll our friends and family. So what do you think. One or two?

  • Copying my reply from the non-poll post...

My husband's name is Elliot (with one T).

People misspell it all the time, but that's the only "right" spelling to me.  It looks weird with two T's to me.  Too cluttered.

  • We have an Elliot.
  • I think Elliott is more commonly a last name spelling while Elliot is first name.
  • I like Elliot, it was our boy name if LO had been a boy. Nice choice no matter how you end up spelling it  :)!

I can't get over the ET reference, I guess it's just NMS. But, I think I would spell it with one "t" as well too alleviate the cluster. However, Elliott Taylor from ET spelled it with 2 t's while Elliot Reid (female) from Scrubs used only one "t".
  • I asked DH (I thought you might be interested in the opinion of someone with first-hand experience with the name) and he said he prefers the one-T version, too, because it looks cleaner and less cluttered.

On the E.T. issue that @redmar mentioned, he's never really liked his name for that reason, but he was born in '81, so, growing up, everyone assumed that's where his mom got the name and he got a lot of teasing in grade school (she didn't, obviously, since E.T. came out the year after he was born).

But that was a long time ago.  I feel like people don't really associate the name with the movie very much anymore.  It was just the hot thing at the time.

  • I'm definitely team 2 t's. Elliot looks odd to me, I think it's a town here I  maine. But I like Elliott. I definitely hear ETs voice every time I see it, but I love that movie.

  • I really like the 2 T's....and that's how I would assume it was spelled if I heard it. But i also have a last name that ends in 2 T's so maybe that's why. Great name either way!
  • You know, weirdly, I don't recall ever seeing an Elliot spelled with two t's! But I think it's a lovely name regardless of the number of t's on the end.

  • I vote for Elliott solely because when he will be asked to spell it, he can say "with 2 Ls and 2 Ts"! It has a nice ring to it.
  • I voted 2 T's because I've only ever seen 2 Ts and 1 T looks odd to me. I don't think it looks cluttered.

But it seems that this board is also evenly split lol

  • @geminigirl16 - Our son is Emmett.. and a lot of family has remembered how to spell it because there's "2 M's and 2 T's" ... although whenever I say "2 E's, 2 M's, 2 T's" I get a blank stare and a "wait... there aren't 2 E's in a row though... right?" No... no there are not.

  • I see the connection to ET as a plus! I do associate the name with the character, but I'm old enough to have seen it in the theater when it came out. I think you're fine with either spelling.
  • I have never seen ET so I didn't think of that at all if that's a big concern for you

And BTW no one ever brings up the movie ET except a couple annoying guys in their mid 30's
  • Thanks for all your input ladies!!!
