Cloth diaper mammas

Just wondering how our cloth diapering moms are doing.  I tried my first one today since my little guy is over 9 lbs.  I used the rumparooz with a disposable insert as kind of a transition from the disposables.  He went ahead and soiled it in a minute so I got a nice crash course. Lol. It was nice to be able to wipe out the shell and replace the liner.  We'll see if it holds one of his big pees. Fingers crossed

  • Our little guy was born weighing 10.7 on June 10th and has already outgrown most of his nb stash! I tried out flips and best bottoms snapped to the smallest rise and those seem to work, but my favorites right now are our grovia  Aios. They're super easy and about as trim as I can get right now until he grows some more.
  • Those of you starting with newborn diapers, did you have any issues with the cord stump?
  • I started using my cloth yesterday! I have DS in thirsties size one covers with a contoured insert and they're working perfectly! Most of his stump fell off last week so I'm not worried about it but the cover doesn't really hit that high anyways.

I have OS Alva pockets at the ready for when baby gets here. DD was 10lbs so we're expecting this guy to be as big and he should fit into OS just fine. Didn't even bother with a NB stash, but a little worried about the cord. I'm also curious, did y'all use disposables before the cord stump fell off (if you've even gotten there yet)?
Also planning on using my regular Kirkland detergent since it seems approved on the Fluff Love & CD Science FB page and I have a regular old top loader instead of an HE - what are you ladies using for detergent?

  • I am going to CD but not during the newborn phase where he needs to be changed a million times a day. I loved CDing with my first, and I remember now how much of a PITA buying sposies is!

  • My girl just doesnt seem big enough yet. The lil' joeys still just seem a little large. Holding out a little longer. Which is giving me anxiety about doing it at all. I think we will end up starting part time cloth just because we already got so used to disposables. Which im not thrilled about at all. Hopefully going to take the dive next week on it.

I felt the same. We still have disposable for nighttime but during the day I have the cloth with disposable inserts.  In excited to start using the washable inserts but we still are using diaper cream but once the rash clears I'll put the prefolds in.
  • Ugh ok rant coming.  I'm so happy we are doing cloth.  At night we've been using disposables until I get the hang of cloth and i keep finding little gel chunks/beads on my son!  We've tried three brands and are just trying to use then up and all three have done this.  What if I had a girl and they got all up in her bits?! They are almost impossible to take off cause they don't stick to the wipes.  And it's hard using prefolds still cause he's got a little butt and the prefolds wants to poke out the front.  I try to fold it over a little but I feel like it'd be easier if I had my snappies (which are in the mail) until he's bigger so I can just trifold them.  Ugh idk I'm in a mood today.
  • @adiaz132003 I had forgotten the gel beads until I started finding them and they're so gross.  I have nb cloth that I haven't started using because I'm using up some disposables I was given until we're well clear of meconium.  I'll be glad to get them out though, we loved cloth with my son and I'm ready to get back to using it with this little guy.
  • I haven't seen any gel beads on my daughter yet?
  • My son is a little over 3 weeks old and we have been using prefolds and thirsties size 1 covers since we got home from the hospital even with the stump. It did rub a few times and even bled onto the cover but it didnt seem to bother him and I was able to get most of it out with stain remover. We had to take a break from the cloth for about a week while he had a rash and had to use some cream that wasn't cloth safe. We just started using them again today.

What prefolds do you use? I have the osocozy size 1 and they are a little short to try and fold over for extra absorbancecy in the front.  Do you tri fold then or snappies/pin them on?
  • I am using a diaper service for the first couple of months so I am not sure the brand but they are newborn size. I am using a snappi to fasten it. I don't have any extra fabric to fold in the front or back anymore since he has grown. Also he pees through in less than 2 hours so I think it's time to move up a size maybe? I had to add a second trifolded prefold over the snappied one for extra absorbancy.

I use powdered Tide and it works amazingly well IMO. No buildup or stink issues with DS1's diapers and they've been used for over 2 years at this point.

Yeah, you're probably ready to go up a size if he's soaking through. Make sure you point his penis down too. If he's leaking out the top of his diaper that's usually the problem.

  • I'm a second-time cloth diapering mom and we haven't had any real issues using them this time around. I will say that we went through a couple of packages of disposables last month trying to treat a persistent diaper rash, and some neighbors gave us a couple more packages which DH has been throwing on DS whenever we run down to the very last of the cloth. I am way more relaxed/less hardcore about it this time around. Or maybe it's just that the disposables are here on my shelf staring at me.

I have decided I like disposables for trips to the pediatrician, because they'll let me weigh him in without taking off his entire diaper first. It probably weighs almost nothing but during that first month when we were struggling with weight gain, every ounce was precious to me.

  • Hey mommas.  Looks like I am on the verge of having a heavy wetter.  I currently use prefolds and covers.  They are pretty bulky so I can't put more than one.  What's the best insert I can put in for nighttime wetting?  I have Flip, rumparooz (which seem to have the biggest issue with leaking out the top if it gets too wet)  and blueberry covers but he's still to small for those.  I either want to splurge of the Flip brand inserts because I know they work well or get some bamboo ones that are cheaper.  Ideas?

I use hybrid diapers with covers for my toddler, although I don't bother with my newborn because he wakes up in the night wanting to be changed so often. I bought them used for like $5 each and have 5 of them. By far the best nighttime solution IMO.
  • We've been using prefolds and covers since birth. It's going great! I used newborn sized all-in-ones with my first kiddo and they always leaked, but these ones are pretty reliable and he can usually use one cover all day. I have 2 in cloth diapers now though and the laundry is a pain in the ass. I always have heaps of laundered but not folded diapers on my couch :/
  • I've been using blueberry simplex AIOs exclusively since day 3. So far, zero leaks, zero rash, zero issues with cord irritation. Love these diapers.
