Baby Names

WDYT: Kai Alexander?

We are having a hard time with boy names. We want something fairly unique (no David, etc.), but not so weird the poor kid would get funny looks all the time. DH has way more "diverse" taste than I do, and I've been shooting down ALL his names. He mentioned Kai recently, and I can't tell if I like it b/c I like it or b/c it's just less weird (relatively) than the other crazies he's been throwing out there.

For background, Alexander must be the middle name, and we have a fairly long, Russian last name.

So, what do you think of Kai?

Dear Bump: You suck.

  • Very NMS.  It's not masculine enough, seems almost prissy to me.
  • Wasn't there a Kai on Queer Eye? That's my first thought when I hear that name.

  • I really like Kai.  And it sounds great with Alexander.

  • I like it.  I actually don't think it sounds prissy at all.  Definitely not prissy like say, Tristan.

  • I it is a great choice! Definitely unique but not weird at al.. no one will ever do a double-take because they think it is an odd name.

  • Hate it for a boy. ?To me, it's not masculine at all.
  • Its NMS, but I'm curious, how do you pronounce it?

Does it sound like Jay? K-eye? I've seen the name a few times but wasn't sure how to say it.

I also thought of Queer Eye reference.

I love Alexander - its on our short list.

Thanks for response.  I was really butchering the name in my head then, ouch.

Its still NMS, but I do like Kai Alexander then when pronounced correctly.

  • I don't like Kai.  I had a friend that named her poor son Kaia.  Didn't like that either.  Sorry.  Love Alexander though!

  • Would you consider Malachi? I don't love either one, but I think Kai may be too short for a first name.

  • I really like the name itself.  However, you said that your last name is Russian and the reference to Kai that I think of is more of a Hawaiian background.  Personally, I like it when the first name 'blends' with the ethnic culture of the last name.  Except maybe there is a Russian background for Kai & I've never heard of it referenced that way.
  • I like it. I know a little boy with that name, but his parents spelled it Kye. I think with the 'ai' spelling, it might be mispronounced Kay. I really like it with Alexander.

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies!

It would be pronounced Ky (like Ty).

I thought about making it into a longer name where Ki/Kai/Ky would be the nickname, but the poor kid will already have a four-syllable middle name and a three-syllable last name. We were looking for something short and sweet for the first name.

My first choice is to go with something with a slight Russian flair, but we're finding that most of the Russian boy names are either very Russian (Dmitry) or already done to death in our circle (Michael, Alexander, etc.).

    Thanks again!

  • My hairdresser had a baby last year and named him Kai (she is Korean, so idk if it was cultural or not) but I really liked it. I had never heard of it before, but I liked that it is simple and not so strange that people won't know how to pronounce/spell it. I think it's a great choice and it really flows well with Alexander.
  • I don't think Kai is prissy.. I had twins in my preschool class named Ray and Kai - I like it and I think it sounds great with Alexander

This is exactly what I was thinking.

I know, right?? This is what I keep trying to tell DH. I love Nikolai, and think Kai would be an appropriate NN. But get this: DH says it's "too Russian." Boo.

You need to keep pressing this one - I think this is a perfect idea!!  Like a pp said, Kai doesn't fit for me with the other Russian names, but Nikolai is a fantastic name that does fit and you can still get the same nick name.  I'm actually really excited about this idea and it's not even my kid :-).

  • I like it. We are prob going to name a boy Malakai and call him Kai for short.
  • I'm surprised by how popular this name is.  I know three little boys named Kai.  It's an ok name, but I don't like how it sounds with Alexander.  It doesn't roll off the tongue very well.

What about Kyle?  Ky could be the nn.

  • Wow- I really like it.  I think Kai sounds like a strong name.
