Naps on the go?

I like taking walks and doing it with baby. He almost always sleeps in his car seat. I'm wondering what people suggest when to do it. During a nap, right after one after he's ate, or other suggestions? I'd rather him take his naps in the crib. Also do you count it if they sleep in the car seat as time they have napped? He is almost 6 weeks old. I try to always make sure he doesn't sleep too much during the day because he is already great at sleeping at night, I don't want to change that.

We walk for about an hour daily, normally at 8am. At this point she has been up for at least 2 hours and ready for her nap. She'll sleep once we start walking, and I will leave her in the car seat when we get home until she wakes up (normally another hour or so). Yup, count it as a nap. She then takes another nap early afternoon (working on getting this to happen in the crib).

  • My LO is pretty adaptable and she naps wherever we are. I have an 8 year old and she has different activities. So we're always on the go. LO will nap in the car, in her stroller, or the bassinet/crib when we're home. I return to work mid July so we're trying to enjoy summer with my older daughter since I never have thus time off with her. I guess I'm lucky LO naps around our schedule instead of us having to plan around her naps.
  • We tend to be out and about doing different things, mainly since I would go crazy sitting at home, so LO naps wherever and whenever. At this point she's not really on a schedule, five weeks today, so it hasn't been too difficult to plan around naps.
  • I'm all about the naps on the go. With my son I usually tried to aim for about half of his naps to be in the crib so he wasn't totally unfamiliar with it, and he is now 2.5 and will still nap in the car, the stroller, and probably in the pack if I was willing to lug his giant body around. Granted, these days if he naps on the go they last like 45 minutes, whereas if he naps in his crib they last like 3 hours, so I prefer the crib nap on most days. I hope this baby will be similarly flexible- I don't know if he is that way because we've always done lots of naps on the go or if he would have been that way anyway (he's got a pretty easygoing temperament for the most part).
  • I count car seat sleeping as a nap... Well really with my 4 week old I don't count anything as a "nap" and it's all just sleeping :-) I try and get out and do something most days, and because he eats every 2-3 hours that means I have to feed him and then immediately leave the house to give myself enough time before he eats again to get anything accomplished. He is the king of napping in his car seat- as soon as the car is moving he's out cold until I take him out of the car seat.

There's a balance to where your LO sleeps. You need familiarity with their crib so they are comfortable there, but you also need to mix it up so they can adapt to napping anywhere. I have a friend whose LO was a terrible sleeper and they created this rigid sleep routine to get her to sleep... And it worked at home but now they're stuck getting her back to her crib, being dead silent, to get her to sleep and they can't nap on the go at all :-(
