Infants and general anesthesia

So, S has a posterior tongue tie, as well as a fairly tight upper lip tie.  Unfortunately we can't get a frenectomy done in the office in this case, and she has to go in for surgery tomorrow morning.  It's apparently still just a 15 minute procedure, but she has to be under general anesthesia for it and that is kind of freaking us out just because she's not even a month old and she's our little baby.  Has anyone had their baby undergo general anesthesia this young?  How did it go?

I will also note that the surgery might end up being postponed once we go in because S has a cold, the anesthesiologist is going to make that call once we're there.

Re: Infants and general anesthesia

  • No advice about anesthesia, but FX for you! DS2 had an anterior tongue tie clipped after birth and just got his lip tie clipped this afternoon. Immediately, his latch improved. Is the anesthesia because of the doctor needing to get to the posterior tie?

Thank you!  Yes, it's the posterior tie that makes the anesthesia necessary.  One thing I've been thinking about though is apparently there's a dentist in town that did a bunch of further education into tongue ties and he does the procedure without anesthesia - he uses a Lazer, and baby is kept awake so he can watch the tongue move to make sure he frees enough tissue but not too much.  Of course that has it's own issues of worry for us!

Also due to the anesthesia we can't feed S after midnight (like a Gremlin) so we are clearly in for an awesome time tomorrow morning no matter what.

  • Good luck tomorrow, and tonight with holding off feedings!
  • Interesting...I know that lasering them is really common here (where I live in Canada). Good luck though. Don't be worried about the GA...lots of babies have surgery and get them! She will do just fine. Babies bounce back really really fast too!

Just wanted to say everything went well!  We got to feed her soon after she got out of surgery and I could already tell the difference!
That's awesome news. So happy to hear!!
