Motherhood maternity return policy

This is half rant of a crying, hormonal pregnant woman and half PSA. Did you guys know that Motherhood Maternity has a 30 day return policy? Anyone know if that is kind of lenient?

As a surprise gift, My parents bought me way too many maternity clothes, half of which don't fit and the others are exact replicas of stuff someone already gave me used in good condition. The closest store is an hour away without traffic, but considering Atlanta traffic, it can turn into a 2-3 hour trip.  Well... We've been crazy busy this past month and haven't had a spare weekend to make that journey. Now the 30 day window is over and I feel so bad. It is probably over $200 worth of stuff, so I feel like the worst, most unappreciative daughter ever and I'm crying about it at 1:30 am. I'm also a tad frustrated with my parents, because I told them over and over to please not buy me maternity clothes because I have had so many recently pregnant friends give me nice used stuff for free, but they show up with so much stuff anyway. agh!! I feel even worse/rude for complaining about a gift so I'll just stop and wahhhhh!. (More pregnant lady tears).

You can most likely return unworn items, if the tags are still on past 30 days/policy time, but would be exchange or store credit only. That's what's typical in the retail industry. If you have the receipt they should honor the price paid; if not, they'll give you whatever price the items ring in at on the day you return them.

Maybe call first just to be sure!

  • I agree with Kittens, call them first and explain what happened, but most likely it'll an exchange or credit type situation.  If the person on the phone says "for sure we'll do an exchange, just come on in" make sure you get their name just in case they aren't working when you arrive.

I would definitely call them first and ask. If you have a receipt and the tags still on them, explain that to them or explain what you do have, so they can give you the right answer. and then, get confirmation from the manager and their name so when you get there you can say, "The manager, Jane, told me this.."

  • I've yet to encounter a store that wouldn't show leniency for something like this. When I was in college, I worked at Charlotte Russe. We had the same 30 day policy, but almost always made exceptions. The only time we didn't was if it was clear the customer had either worn or stolen the items. Also, I've returned stuff to Old Navy out of the 30 day window several times. Definitely call before you make the trip, but I'm almost certain they'll let you make the return.

  • If you wind up with store credit and don't need maternity clothes, you could spend it on nursing bras.

I'm sorry! I had a friend give me a brand new shirt that she bought from there, and we live an hour and a half away from the store too. It's one of those silky ones, and it doesn't even come down over my chest... I just found it yesterday, and realized it's been closer to 60 days. We'll have to see how lenient they feel when I'm up there for something else later in the month. I feel bad potentially wasting her money, but she's a bigger lady too- she should know that those kinds of shirts don't work well for us, and the store is too far away!
  • If all else fails, you could try to resell the items on eBay or something.  There's a decent market for used maternity clothes so even though you won't get the full amount you would at least get something.
  • I second what @MKJeffrey2002 said.  I hope they let you return the clothes, but if they won't take them back (or if you don't want store credit, which is probably what you'd get if they let you return the items), you could try to resell them either on eBay, ThredUp, a local consignment store or a local childrens buy/sell/trade Facebook group.  You might not get the total value, but it's better than nothing.
  • I had to return a shirt that I bought then it no longer fit. She tried to tell me about the 30 day policy and I told her it's completely stupid for a 30 day policy when you never know how you're going to grow or worse, something bad happens. I said if they won't return my items I was never shopping there again because it was just going to be a waste. After a bit of a hormonal attitude, she finally took the item back.
  • I had to exchange pants at Thyme a few weeks ago (I owed them for 8 weeks and they ended up ripping in the thigh).  They exchanged them no issues, but I was tempted on asking the cash lady what her worst hormonal lady moment was.
