Crib Painting

Has anyone painted or refinished a crib before? We have a beautiful and expensive crib for my son, but it's a dark wood and I would love a white crib for our upcoming daughter. It feels wasteful to buy something new so my mom suggested we paint it. Has anyone sucessfully done this? Does it look okay? Turn out alright? Any tips?

Re: Crib Painting

  • I haven't done it myself yet, but just a couple hours ago was looking up info on it! I googled "ikea crib paint" and found the first result (a blog how-to) was very helpful. Talked a lot about sanding and painting over finishings and stuff, with pictures!! I know yours probably isn't ikea but could hopefully help you too.

Also this page https://www.vintagerevivals.com/2015/11/painting-furniture-for-a-baby-nursery-is-it-safe-to-paint-a-crib.html was informative, an educated (seemingly) post about the types of paint often deemed "dangerous" for babies and how that's kind of exaggerated sometimes.

Good luck! And share photos :)

  • We purchased a crib and had it painted grey to match my sons room. The paint was sticky feeling so I sent it back and had her repaint it. It still never felt fully dry an then I started panicking about when my son got older and potentially getting paint in his mouth from biting the crib which many ppl said was common. So I ended up literally trashing the crib and buying another one. I personally will never paint a crib again b/c it was a waste of money and source of stress. However, I know that lots of ppl do it successfully. I would say whichever paint you buy make sure it is non toxic.
