Rolling over affecting sleep

Has anyone else been dealing with a baby who just won't stop rolling in their crib?
My LO rolls constantly. Last night, I was up every 15 minutes--either rescuing paci, or un-wedging her from the corner, or helping her back over when she can't roll again for lack of space. At around 3, and me near tears, my husband went and slept on the couch so I could just put her in the bed with me. With me anchoring her, she seemed to sleep a lot better, and the only time we moved was when I moved her to my other side so I could face that way.
She's never been swaddled--she hates it, and due to AR, has slept in a boppy until recently. We had transitioned her out for about a month prior to her rolling, but I put her back in it for a few days because it seemed she was sleeping better. Now, she's rolling in the boppy, too, and that feels too risky. The last 2 weeks have been rough, but she's always been able to get a good chunk of sleep before starting the rolling around 3:30/4. Last night, it started at 11:30!
Anybody else dealing with this?

Re: Rolling over affecting sleep

  • Not as bad as you! But when I put her in her crib she rolls for a while. She cant roll tummy to back yet so she cried when she rolls. Sometimes she falls asleep on her tummy after a few min. But we have that issue. Its toned down the last week or so (after a week and a half of her being obsessed). I give her lots of rolling time during the day and sometimes even put her in her crib to roll just so I can tidy her room and put away clothes.

  • My LO rolls constantly and gets himself wedged everywhere. It doesn't seem to affect his sleep though. I walk in to find him in the funniest positions. Is your LO crying every time she gets stuck? My LO cried every time for a while when he got stuck and one day it just stopped and he would maybe let out one wail and then stop crying and go back to sleep. He prefers to wedge his whole body along the side of the crib to sleep, so we got a mesh crib bumper. I hope you figure it out soon!
  • Yes. Just started. Sometimes she's crying in her sleep because she's wedged funny or I go in to find her tummy timing on her own.
  • My baby rolls until her feet get stuck in the sides of the crib and then once stuck she is anchored and falls asleep.  I leave her like this because it is the only way she likes to sleep.
  • So over rolling over while sleeping. Last night was brutal!
  • Yep, same here. But LO can't roll from tummy to back yet so she'll get frustrated and cry cause she can't get unstuck. She immediately rolls to her tummy, but then gets pissed. Ugh! I'm waking up several times per night to put in the paci/roll back over.

My little guy has been frustrating himself for a couple of weeks by rolling onto his belly in his sleep. But the last few nights he has slept 6+ hours on his belly! Maybe he's getting used to it?
  • We are going through this too. DS was getting out of his magic sleep suit and rolling over. So we had to stop using it. Last night was the first full night without it and he did better than I thought but still woke up twice crying on his belly. I'm not sure why he won't just roll back over like he does during the day or fall asleep on his belly, but we'll just have to see how the next few nights go...
  • My little guy has always been a rollie pollie and active sleeper. Even when I was pregnant! Last night he woke up 3 times b/c he had rolled to his tummy and couldn't roll back. We usually take a blanket and lay it across his chest/belly leaving his legs uncovered (cause he'll kick it off if they are.) When he's falling asleep he likes to pull the blanket over his face. It's usually just enough cushion and support to help him stay on his side and not flip around so much.
  • My girl woke up SIX times last night from rolling. Anyone do anything to help?
  • I've given up. While she's calm, it's great. The first two or three times she needs a rescue, I calm her(without picking her up), put paci back in, reposition, and turn the white noise back in. Once we hit a certain point, though, I just put her in the bed with me. My husband's been on the couch out of consideration for this. Last night was a huge storm, and even though she wasn't scared, the thunder kept waking LO up. So...instead of 2 or 3, she was in bed with me at 11:30. And I was awakened this morning, when she decided to use my hair to pull herself onto her side. She can go to sleep without being in bed with me, so I'm hoping once she gets the rolling under control, we won't have a battle getting her back in the crib full time.
  • @grkgdss00 DS is doing the same thing. Last night I was in his room 4 times with him crying on his belly! Did your baby learn how to roll back over yet or did you find a solution that worked for you?
  • @katiedid0907 she's just starting to roll the other way now, in her crib. She does it at night and wakes up mad cause she's stuck in the short part of crib (perpendicular to the long part) on her back. She's done this about 6 times now, but I haven't seen her do it in daytime yet. So it's taken her a few weeks to figure it out, and she hasn't mastered it yet.

I have sleep wedges for lo. She had one frustrating night of rolling and getting stuck and I pulled out the wedges. They're made by jolly jumper I think. They're just two foam triangles that attach underneath and you stick baby between them. I used them with DD1 until she was 10 months old and started rolling over them.

I did not buy this, but seriously contemplated it. I still am. Griffin no longer uses the receiving blankets underneath the crib mattress to keep him in position, but he still rolls from side, to side, and is pretty darn close to rolling over in the Merlin suit. I am going to start naps without the suit soon. We are about to enter the 5th Leap too, which calls for less sleep and worse sleep, so I am not so sure I want to go there with getting him out of the suit just yet. But I figured, if he may end up being a total terror during this leap, I really won't notice too much of a difference with the transition....I hope.  :s

Curious to know if anyone else has purchased this.

Edit because the link will not work. If anyone is interested it's on Babies R Us' website.  It is called Baby Boom Reste Safe Sleep Solutuon. It's only $30.

@teachmegs817 I used one with my babe a few months back. He was always moving to get his head into a corner (from sleeping so much in the bouncer because of his reflux) and I was paranoid he was going to smother as he always had his face against the side of the bassenet/pack n play so when we transitioned to the crib we decided to unswaddle at the same time. I was afraid he would hit his head so hard trying to get to the corner for comfort. So we decided to use this product and It worked wonders! (Also, like that it's endorsed by first candle) It is Velcro...so have everything undone BEFORE you need to lay our LO down! Haha but my LO had no issues! He transitioned to being in the crib and unswaddled pretty much unphased. I used it from about 10 weeks to 16 weeks. And now he peacefully sleeps in the center of his bed all night.

    Edit: autocorrect...
  • My LO can roll from back to tummy but not tummy to back. Anyone else have this problem? Or have you been doing anything to encourage rolling tummy to back? I thought they were supposed to do tummy to back first!
  • Anyone else noticing baby favoring one side? Cory used to always sleep on his left side, but able to roll to both sides. Now he only rolls on his left side. Doesn't matter if he starts on his back or on his tummy, he always goes to the left. Tried multiple times today to get him to roll to the right and he wouldn't do it. Maybe just a phase?
  • @cali1710 We rolled from tummy to back at 5 weeks, but now, since she's rolling back to tummy, it's like she's forgotten how to do the other! Tummy to back always appears to be an accident for most babies IMO. We had to lay mats down on our hardwood floors because it really is just a slight movement, and then gravity takes over. My LO cracked her head pretty hard the first time, and I had her on 3 blankets!

@beccanforrest22 My daughter def prefers sleeping on her right side. It surprises me, because we used to put her on her left side (and I rock her left side down) due to reflux issues. Now she's all about sleeping on that right side.
  • @stephanienjer at 8 weeks my LO rolled tummy to back. Maybe in a span of a month she did it like 10 times. Never since.

@beccanforrest22 mine also prefers the left. She can roll both ways but definitely favours the left side!!
  • Well, I spoke about the Merlin suit being on its way out and today was the day.  I walked into his room after hearing him fuss on the monitor to find him already on his belly in the suit.  I was maybe 10-15 feet away from his room from the time I saw him on the monitor to the time I got into his room.

We are 3 days from the 5th Leap. Either 1 or both of his front teeth are maybe 1-2 weeks from popping through. Pedi. had said 2-3 weeks, and that was a week ago. And today for naps I started him in the Zippadee Zip. Currently, he's sleeping on his side all cute and snuggly in the Zippadee.

Lord help me! I'm hoping for a smooth transition, for us all.  I think this whole thing happened on purpose just at the right time.  Today was my 1st day of Summer vacation from school.  So now I have all the time in the world to catch up on potential lost sleep and to make sure LO is getting through this transition smoothly.  :expressionless:  :p
  • @teachmegs817 we start the 5th leap tomorrow. Lord help us all! I don't think shes teething yet so lets hope thats not added to it!

I am hoping if anything, our nighttime sleep doesn't get to off schedule.  He pretty much STTN, with not a lot of movement or anything. Naps are going to be rough, I feel.  The last couple of days, even when we were still using the Merlin suit, he wasn't napping the way he usually does. It could also be, now that I am home.  My mom watches him during the week while I work. Having me home more now, may throw him through a loop. I'm teaching Summer School, starting next Tuesday. Hopefully that'll help. Good luck with the leap! A lot of the women on my December FB group said it was rough for a couple of weeks, but not the entire duration of the leap. I can only hope.

I am 6 days from finishin the 5th leap... @teachmegs817 @cali1710 naps were impossible in the beginning but nighttime sleep stayed about the same with a few rough nights, except the last 2 nights he's been up whining ever two hours!!! I think that's from his teeth though he already has the two front bottom ones! We use the zipadee zip took about 5 nights before he was back to sleeping just as well as before so don't give up on it too quick :) you guys will be fine the leap was realllllllly rough at first but not the whole time although with 6 days left there's still time!
