Pools and LO

hey ladies.. This may be a dumb question but for those of you who already have children, when did you first get in a pool with them? We have a small pool this summer and I so wish I could enjoy it with Mila but I know some people say this is not a good idea. Is it because of chemicals or what? What's your thoughts and opinions on this and what age do you plan to take your LOs into a pool? We have her two month appt in a few days and I plan to discuss with the pediatrician as well.

Re: Pools and LO

  • The pediatrician will probably say 6 months, especially if it's a public pool. All the germs, urine, etc from other people are what causes the chlorine smell you're so used to and apparently it can sometimes cause respiratory issues in younger infants from what I've read. Also you never know how well it's maintained. If not done properly then there could be germs you don't want your LO in contact with.

We have a pool at home the DH maintains and we plan on taking LO in it once he gets his shots at 2 months. Of course we plan on talking with the pediatrician again before hand, but a quick conversation at the last appointment indicated she wasn't too worried about it. The chlorine would kill most germs, but we figure by then his head control will be a little better and we would feel better just in case. We won't be taking him in any other pools or sources of water though, just what we can control. Everything I've read is as long as you just don't keep them in the water too long bc of temperature control that it's fine if it's your own pool.

  • Yea. I assumed public pools were a no go but I wondered if I could get a little mini pool to put her in at our home. No chemicals. Just hose water.

    Does that sound safe?

I would think as long as it's not freezing cold that it would be ok. Not much different than them being in water for a bath just make sure you put a hat on LO to avoid sun exposure @Charla1224 I dont plan on taking her to a public pool.. Just want to use ours at home but we do use chlorine. It's just sooo stinking hot out lately it would be nice to be able to enjoy pool time with our LOs.
  • @Charla1224 As long as it isn't reclaimed water you are good to go.

We took DS into our personal pool fairly early, and let him splash around a baby pool that I got in with him before that. He really seemed to enjoy it. We've never taken him to a public pool though.

  • @Charla1224 we let DS1 splash around in a mini pool at 4 months. We filled it and let the sun warm up the water before sitting in it. By 4 mo, he was sitting pretty well on his own, but I sat right behind him just in case he randomly toppled so that he didn't end up with a face full of water. @kp90 we waited on chlorinated pools until 1 yr because of chemicals & availability, but I know many who start around 6 months.
  • We've brought our LO in my parents pool already, well pretty much just her toes. My dad does a great job maintaining it so it's always crystal clear. We plan on taking her in as long as the water isn't too cold

I was planning to do water babies classes, and the ones I looked in to will take them at 12 weeks. I know my mom did them with me when I was 3 or 4 months old so I wasn't too worried about it. I guess I could ask the pediatrician....

I have heard a salt water/ozone filter is more gentle on skin.
I wouldn't with chlorine due to wanting to avoid harsh chemicals on delicate skin at this age.
First baby we waited until 7 months to take a swim class (which was really just songs and getting used to water).
  • Do you think the pediatrician says 6 months because that's how long they like you to wait to apply sunscreen? (Or mine at least) We have a salt water pool and I've been dying to lay out and bring her in. Also, slightly unrelated question, swimming with stitches? Yeah, or nah?

I'm not sure. @1mae2016 maybe it does have to do with the sunscreen thing. I'll find out in a week or so at her next appt. But I know what you mean, I want to get in our pool with her as well. Also about the stitches thing.. I laid out and got in ours one day while DH had LO in the house but I'm thinking my stitches were dissolved by then. Doctors would probably recommend not to but wouldn't hurt to ask.

I asked about taking LO to a saltwater pool and our pediatrician said 2 months was totally fine. LO loves bathtime so I'm really looking forward to pool time!
